How to finish a shaft

I bought a cheap shaft for my sneaky pete break cue the other day, and when it arrived it has no finish on it. It looks weird (obviously) because the rest of the cue is maple with a finish and she shaft is lighter at the joint up through the shaft because it is just untreated maple. If i could do it myself i would like to make it look like the rest of the cue, but i know nothing about it. Any help would be appreciated.

Well the part where you said you know nothing about doing the work pretty much means it should be left to someone who does. That being said, chances are it still won't look like the rest of the cue so I'd suggest having a cue repairman just seal and polish the shaft. You generally only apply finish to the first few inches of the shaft anyway so there will be a beginning of the finish nearby anyway so it might as well be at the joint. JMHO
 
If you're feeling brave & creative, a good combination, grab a can of Krylon clear and have at it.
What's the worst that could happen???
Tape-off the shaft about 4-5" up from the joint and lay on multiple light coats over
a 1hr period. That would be maybe 3-4 coats. Give the first coat plenty of time to soak-in.
Give it several hrs to dry & remove the tape.
You can 'feather' the tape edge in after a day or so using 400/600 grit paper, then some wax.

I'm always feeling brave and creative! The worst that can happen is it is unusable because of appearance, same as it is Now. And to have it done by someone else wouldn't be worth it as it may be more than I paid for the shaft itself.
