this is not a bad idea. As long as the process didn't take long it could be workable.
Shuffling would give the player in his chair something to do while the other guy is runnin' out

Random racking isn't very difficult.
Yeah, I agree, those methods would never catch on...nor would I advocate them. On the topic of randomness, though, I love this comic:Doing it so everybody's sure it's random is the difficulty.
I don't think any method that uses extra equipment or makes the racker put each numbered ball in a specific position will catch on. Too time consuming and annoying.
Myself, I never give pattern racking a second thought. If both players are breaking at normal break speeds it doesn't seem to matter enough to worry about.

I think random racking is just something you do until you know better. I'm watching dvd's of the predator tour and robles, sigel and 4 others are racking thier own and each has their own "formula" that puts the balls in general areas after the break. They all see what the other is doing and no ones calling a foul. When your opponent is racking he places them so the balls go to opposite ends[generally] and when tournament refs rack they are instructed to place key balls to achieve ball placement in order to move the game along. Most instructors teach you how to rack to make it easier to run. I think the answer is to rack em 1,2,3,4,9,5,6,7,8. Every time. If you figure out a way to take advantage, more power to ya!
I was shown and also read on these forums the way to rack depending on which side the breaker is breaking from, to make it for the rackers advantage. But I could never remember (LOL) and now instead just rack in order. I swear when the 6, 7, or 8 or in the top positions, I can't get a good rack. I know, it's all in my head.
