How to plastic impregnate wood

Hello all.
I am curious how to impregnate wood with a resin. I occasionally work with burl's and would like to fill the voids with resin like the available impregnated woods that are out on the market.
I was thinking that putting the wood in a vaccum and then filling the container ( without releasing the vaccum ) with the resin and then applying air pressure to the top of the container until the resin sets up. Any thoughts would be helpful. Chris.

Chris,
Are u gonna use it for cues? It would make the wood heavier.
If what you mean are the pores, you could use minwax or a finish epoxy and just sand it down to even it out. That is on the outer part and would look fine. But if you want to fill the wood up all the way inside then that's the way to go I suppose. You could check out stabilized woods on-line to see what they do to make sure.

Chris, there is a guy in Arizona that sells wood for pens that is stablized with plastics. His name is Bill Bombeck and his phone is 928-329-8039. He also has stablized wood in large enough pieces for cues but I have never used any as I prefer the natural woods for now. I am sure he could and would answer the questions you have about how the process works and what equipment is needed.
Here is a link to his website.

thanks

Willee, thanks for the info. I spoke with bill today and he was very friendly. It sounds as though there is a resin that sets up when it is heated. I have no idea where to find something like that. I will do a little searching and let you know if I find any. Chris.

It is done by putting the wood in a vacuum chamber with the resin. It draws out all the air and it is replaced with the resin. You can build one of these yourself, it is very easy. This way you can do any piece of wood you please.
