I would have tried the same thing. Actually have done this shot with the two balls touching. You will use center left cueball english but not a hard stroke. Cueball shouldnt travel far once contacting the 9ball. It is a stroke shot though.
If the two balls are not touching, I would use use 11:30 english on the cueball, cutting the 9 slightly getting the double hit. Hit the cueball, cueball hits 9, 9 into the pocket rail behind it, 9 bounces off and back into cueball and in hole. This too is a soft stroke. I was taught this way of making it using the side pocket instead of corner. Again, cueball doesn't travel far.
Nice drill though for your stroke and throws.
