How to pronounce Schön

My German professor (Dr. Tolk) would have pronounced it as shurn. The umlauted letter is spoken as a "ur". Back in the 50's, Chemical Engineering students were advised to take two years of German - I wound upped taking 4 years of it.

You are the closet yet :) There absolutely is a rolled "r" letter in pronouncing the name...and lots of "drag" in the back of the throat say the "ur" part...
umlauts are a b1tch :)

There is a reason we call Munchen (with umlaut) by the name Munich :) Or the best one is Koln (with umlaut) , that we just call Cologne Germany.... Because we would F that one up too big time :)

Again, most folks in Chicago just call it "Shown".. no umlaut.. and everyone and his brother know exactly what you are talking about...

Just pronounce the damn word as it is written.

If it is shown then it is shown.

I am told it is pronounced "sho-wen" with an emphasis on the "e"

germanic umlaut

This is so easy....

It's a Germanic Umlaut

in the case of Schon it's pronounced (phonetically) as

shE Own

with a deep sound on the O....as with pursed lips....

I thought so. Thankfully I don't have this cue or else I would sound stupid every time I spoke about it.

I am going to call its proper name now.

Don't want to sound like a southern redneck with no grasp of language.

I talked to Terry Romine in the 90s, I asked him about my use of 'SHOWN'.
He was the first one to tell me it was actually 'Shern'.....

That's quit perfect. You just don't hear the "r" in Shern and then you got it!
Perfectly spoken in (Normal) German language, without any local accent from Switzerland Austria, Eastern Germany or from anywhere else!

Bravo Terry, even after you passed away you still can help us out today!

Respectfuly, Rob

I've heard it pronounced both ways, almost dependent on region of the country or how someone else first heard it pronounced. I was friends with Matt, Bob's son, while I was in college, and knew Terry and his family quite well and shot at Romine's for 15 years. I never once heard anyone pronounce it as "shown", it was "shawn". Which explains why I also pronounce it that way. It's possible Evan or someone else pronounces it "shown" now, but that was not the way it was introduced to me. I think either pronunciation is understood, and neither is technically correct when compared to the official German version.

--> long time multiple Schon cue owner, however it's pronounced...
