hi all,

My case : predator Blak 4x8 soft case.

after 2,3 rainy days, I take one butt out of the cue and suprisingly find out that the linen handle is WET, yes I mean wet, even very wet :(

So I suppose it's because of the weather... ?

Does a well-made leather case with help with the protection against moisture ?

Somebody has experiences on this please give me some advice.

Thanks so much and have a nice weekend.

Are you keeping the cue in a car?

im not aware of waterproof or dehumidifying cue cases
if they exist a link would be great
if im going to the pool room and its railning (although i try not to)
i wrap my case in a plastic garbage bag or 2 to cover it as i walk from the car to the room
i throw those bags away when i get there and bring 2 dry ones to use for when i leave

Whenever I buy a case (for myself or to re-sell), I always save the plastic wrap, as it's the perfect fit for the protection you describe...I keep one in my case at all times.

In response to the original post, do your hands sweat a lot? Could be just sweat in the wrap. I always carry a rag or towel to wipe off my cue (including ferrule and tip) before returning it to the case.

The ONLY time I have ever had a cue get wet inside a case, was when I left the case in trunk of my car, which had a leaky window seal when it would rain hard.
I then drove another car for a few days during a few days of bad weather.

When I remembered the cue being in the leaky car, it was wet when I took it out of the case, where I had to paper towel all the moisture out of the linen wrap.

It never got rained on directly, it was just from hanging out in all that humidity in the car from the leak.

Fortunately, it's not an expensive cue, and played perfectly fine once dry.
But im sure it could have been worse if I left it in there for longer.

No no, the case stay in my house and of course don't have any direct contact with the rain ( or water  ).

It's all about the moisture ( or humidity - don't know if this word even exist  ).

So, I'm a little scared about how wet it could become...
For infos, all of the cues putting in cases that left at my pool hall at that time got the same problem LOL...

Any help please...

Sweaty hands + linen wraps is the culprit.

I didn't use the cue for few months so I don't think it's from sweety hand :)

Back to the question, is a leather case can protect the cues from the moisture ? is there any kind of weather-seal ?

Thanks for your inputs.

HelloBaby,

Are you really in Paris? I'm in Southern Louisiana, USA. It's hot & very humid here & I've never had a problem like yours. But... moisture & condesation can be elusive at times, coming & going. I would suggest that you dry out your case extremely well. Lay it out in the sun & then use a hair blow dryer to blow hot air down the compartments. I might even attach a small towel to an opened up coat hanger & run it back & forth inside the compartments.

Hope this helps & Good luck with it.

Best Wishes,

Thank for your helps,
And yes I'm from Paris, and it's just about 2 weeks of non-stop raining, and yes it happens in Paris in autumn :).
Have a nice day.

Some cues just suck up moisture like a sponge. When I was a cue dealer I would often have some cues that would get clammy while others in the next slot would be perfectly dry.

That said you can certainly buy cases which minimize the exposure to moisture in the air. A GTF for example makes a bit of seal and keeps most of the moisture out. Our cases are sealed at the bottom to prevent moisture from getting in and our lids are snug fitting to keep more moisture from getting in. We also use a fabric that doesn't retain moisture and allows it to evaporate instead of clinging to the cue.

That said you can just keep the case in a plastic bag or some sort of dry bag as used in rafting. I would try to find out though if your cue is particularly moisture absorbent. Perhaps it would be a good idea to have it rewrapped and the handle sealed as well as putting some sealer on the ends for good measure.

THIS!

I've had cues that when it rained, played like total garbage, but they played amazing when it was dry out.
It was like two different cues the hit was so different.

Wow, this's what I'm waiting for... Thank you.

Can you tell me if it's possible to make one soft leather case with that kind of weather-seal ?

The hard case is tooooo heavy for me to carry it around, I'm too lazy ....

I think you worry more than you should. If you keep your cues (whether in or out of the case) in the rooms where you live, you should have no problems at all.

Just to clear up something about the silica packs. While the absorb moisture the smaller ones do not absorb that much moisture. They are used to absorb the small of amount of moisture in a sealed package.

Silica beads get full. Just like a cup they fill up with moisture and then don't take any more. To get the moisture out you have to heat them. So putting a package into a case which is exposed to the elements won't do a lot of good, if any.

You can find all this out online with a little bit of searching. I did because at one time I thought it would be great to build cases with a spot for the silica packs.

I suppose that they would be somewhat effective in cases which seal or the ones which provide a decent moisture barrier. But you would need to put in a fresh package just about every time you open the case. I think that they sell packages which turn a different color when they are full so you could know when to replace them.

My money is on the cue being the problem more than the case. I used to live in Germany, not far from France and we got weeks of rain as well. As I said with hundreds of cues from dozens of makers I got pretty intimate with a wide range of characteristics.

We could put a waterproof zipper on the case. I can't guarantee you that this will seal it completely but it should be more of a barrier. We'd also wax the seams to fill the holes left by the sewing.

Given time and inclination I am sure we could make a waterproof soft case for you. But honestly right now I don't have the time or enough staff to handle the orders we have. So a waterproof zipper and waxing the seams is the best I can offer you.

being on the ocean how do you protect your cues from moisture???:grin-square:

What does rain have to do with your cues if they are stored inside your home???
Is the home naturally aspirated...meaning outside air is same as inside air?

Is there air conditioning in your home?

The problem is likely that the humidity levels are too high in the home, the case gets warm and humid, then at night when the air cools, it leaves behind the moisture,...because the cool air can't hold the humidity so it sweats the moisture on the objects and in the objects that were warm and humid...

If its as I suspect...and the temperature in your home is going up and down with the weather...you are going to need to keep your cues OUT OF THE CASE...as the case will prevent the air flow from drying the cues...and it will actually trap in moisture...at the very least...leave the case open
