How to refinish rails?

Hello, i have been refinishing my pool table from the ground up. I've got everything sanded and repainted. Now I'm moving to the rails and I'm at a crossroads. How do I repaint the rails with the sight inlays? Is there a tacky tape/substance i can put over them without cutting? Don't want to use xacto and leave a divot trying to cut tape. Or is there an easy way to remove sights? Any info would be appreciated

Are you actually using paint and not stain on your rails? Painter's tape works fine to cover an area not included in the painting or staining as long as you just carefully only cover the sight inlays.

I'm "toning". So using 2 parts stain, 2 parts lacquer, 4 parts lacquer thinner. Using a spray gun. If your method is valid with this method of painting how do you perfectly cut the design? Worried bout scoring the wood cutting the diamonds. Or being a little sloppy with cut and having bleed through

Trace the design on a transparent paper and then cut your painters tape the design - you can use two or more layers of design cut painters tape for each sight if worried about bleed through

need to put this in 'Ask a Mechanic' section. Get a lot more pertinent info.

extremely light coating of clear nail polish. Hopefully I don't need to tell you to remove it when you're done "painting". ;)
