Its 8 ball in an in-house blue collar league, so your safeties better look like you tried to make in the corner you called. You're solids, and the 13 is frozen to the rail, and the 1 is frozen to the 13. I won this game after being faced with this, but it was pure luck.

I can see your diagram, but the probability of winning from here is slim, IMO. Perhaps a one pocket specialist would be better able to get you out of this, maybe.

Here is the first Hail Mary shot (that comes to mind) that might work if the 1 ball and 13 ball are sitting right. Even playing a deliberate safe has the potential to sell out tough.

No way...you will lose 18 out of 20 (at least!) if you try to go 2 rails in the side w/ 1ball.

You bank the 14ball at the other side, but too long to make it. Cue hits side-> end-> other side-> to top rail. Maybe even close to the 8ball. not that it matters, you have left your opponent nothing...except the loser/ 2 railer/ hail mary shot that you just passed up...

So, what did you do?

my oppinion...

in my oppinion i play safe here... hit the one ball with straight outside (maybe a touch of top english)and "try to bank it in the corner" but accidentally leaving your cueball behind the 4 ball taking away your opponents shot on the 8 ball and breaking up your cluster.

I agree with this, that’s why I called it a Hail Mary shot.

If you reread the original post, you’d see that 8 ball is the game and solid’s are his balls (one ball). Hitting the 14 ball would give BIH to the opponent. Not that that’s a bad strategy, but I think I ‘d try to make the 14 ball under those circumstances. The original poster implied the question of “what to do?” in this situation, playing safe while making it appear as though he was going for a shot. You didn’t offer anything other than giving up BIH.

I tried to feather the 1 toward the top left corner in this diagram, hoping to get some kind of double kiss that would keep the 13 near the rail. It didn't work, of course, and I sold out. My opponent gagged on an easy shot though, so I won.
 
I would have gone up table lightly kissing the one ball with left english and bringing the CB back down to the head rail and try to make it sit on it. Make him try to make the 14 up table and see what happens.

I think I figured out that WEI table thing. If you play that shot, to perfection of course, you would free up the one ball for either pocket but still hiding it do he has no choice but to shoot the 14. He only has to miss or scratch, then it is a runout for you.

Oh- btw- I hope my opponent can't make the 13 w/BIH!!

Thanks for the ideas. This has really been eating at me, and I'm glad I just wasn't overlooking a really obvious solution. If I was playing under normall rules I would have banked his fourteen in and made him try to do something with that ugly lie, or hit the left english safety that barely grazed the one, like you guys said. But this game had alot of impact on standings and this league pays out money, so would not be invited back next year if I left them thinking I was playing "sissy" pool to win money. I know in most circles safeties are an honorable skill, but I like the challenge of finding safeties that are two way shots in this league. If I make it fine, if not I hook 'em.
 
First time using that table... This is the shot I would probably TRY, though I doubt I'd get it to work. Hitting the one thin enough and at the right speed would be key, I guess.
