...I *know* I can clip the 9, so I'd go that route ... even if I *thought* I might be able to miss the 9. Now, of course, if I knew that I could miss it just as easily as I could clip it, then I'd probably choose to avoid the 9.

There is a ton of wisdom in this post... the kind of knowledge that seems so obvious when it's explained, but is so elusive until it is.

Bottom! Top will put you in horrible position. I tried this on poolcomps about 20 times because it's (thankfully) not blocked from work. They have very realistic physics... so if anybody tries this out on a real table please let us know how you did it!

A predictable, controlled collision is not always bad. I like a thin clip on the 9, controlling the CB with high inside to come off two rails...

Carom shape is very, very useful in rotation type games, they come up all the time.

This is also an equipment-related shot. If the rails are a little dull or the cloth is a bit worn, you're simply not going to get the necessary action.

I was going to mention this too: the cloth/rail speed plays a huge part in limiting your options here with the one-rail draw.
