Hustlers be a hustlin'

Morra won 6-5

Isn't lefty Morra's "norm" now and therefore he's just getting the weight from Alcano? Or am I thinking about the wrong Morra?

Or did I do too many drugs in the 60s... that might be the ticket.

John had not made the switch permanent at the time or played in any events in the US lefty and I don't think Ronnie knew how well John played lefty.

At that point he had been playing that way here and there but for the most part ....private matches.

Yep, a good way to :eek: the he'll out of an opponent.

I know it would have got my attention.

Anyone know when that match was? It was posted end of March this year. The reason I ask is, I saw somewhere Morra is either winning or finishing high in tournaments, lefty. If that match was played the same time it was posted to YT, effectively 1st April this year, that was less than 2 months ago.So if he's winning/finishing high *now*, then less than 2 months ago ( during that match ), lefty had to be pretty much his competitive speed if that makes any sense. And, if so, then playing lefty against Ronnie couldn't be considered much of a "counter-spot" ( you play opposite-hand, I play with a bridge ). That's what I meant when I said Ronnie was simply giving up weight, not getting any in return.

Yes, you are correct. To me it was one-sided to say the least......at least IMO it was.

Ronnie uses the bridge as good as any but not as well as Morra plays opposite handed as he does not "really" have an opposite hand. Anyone that has seen him match up in high stakes would know that he can use either hand +- small% equally- well when in "dead punch".

He has always been able to play damn strong no matter which hand he used. True, it is probably ~75% to ~80ish % when not in dead punch but combined that with his opponent using a bridge and the % goes to 100% easily.

All ^^^^^^^ that adds up to a loser for his opponent IMO.

Hustling is easy when only one of the players in question is a true "hustler". It may not pay as well today as it did before but it's still easy to do. Whats hard is "Hustling a Hustler" and pulling it off. That's hustling right there!

EDIT:

I cannot remember the dates.

I know, right?

One thing that might've evened it out a bit in some side-betters' minds is, not too terribly long ago, Ronnie was considered, in many camps, to be the ( and if not the, then one of ) strongest money-player in the world. So maybe they figured he would snap it off anyway. Who knows...

I thought of that but as we know, when it comes to matching up with weight being given, the strongest player is the one with the strongest spot.

There are exceptions to the rule but I'll take the rule any day as there are far more rules than exceptions. There, that should be clear as mud :scratchhead:

Right! :bash:

I recall stories of Corey just torturing some excellent players when using the rake for every shot. The report I remember was that Corey played quite close to the same speed with the bridge than he does normally. Does anyone have the details of that? Am I mis-remembering?

As an aside, I think the Morra/Ronnie match was for pretty small money. If John was really looking to hustle people lefty, you'd think he would have lined up a big money match and not blown his cover for small change.

I was not aware of it being small bets. In that case, I agree.

Considering you do not get a "second" chance once you show what you got....hmmm, it does not make sense.
