So I went to a tournament this past tues(first time I had been to this one). As soon as I see my name on the board against g. jamito I know I am likely out in the first round. He did spot me 4 games and I should have won at least 1 if not 2. But, it was a good experience none the less. JUst wish the experience could have been farther down the line in the tournament.

Don't sweat it - look at it as a learning experience.

I've been playing in local tournaments for the past couple of years, usually doing horrible - just lately though, I've been improving my performance and doing better. Just last night, I managed to win a little local 9-ball tournament that I would usually go two-and-out in, and last Sunday, took 2nd in another 9-ball tournament I'd usually do lousy in.

Persistence! :D

I've been playing in tournaments lately which have very good players and are tough to win. I went two and out in one of these last week, but did manage to win 2 games (race to two).

And then I went to another tournament and the tournament was cancelled. But one of the best players showed up too. So I played this guy for 2 hours and lost every single game except the last game we played. And with this guy, if you miss once he will run out on you most of the time. That is what I need, but hard to find this good of a player around here.

I won 1st place in an easy to win local tournament a week ago. So quite a difference between the easy tournaments and the tougher tournaments/players.

Anyway I can't wait to go play in that tough tournament again. Also the other tournament is cancelled again next week, so hope that guy shows up again (so I can get a few more lessons!)

Yeah.. I like the experience. BUt, I would prefer getting the experience in like the finals or even the second round lol. I guess $5 was a very cheap lesson though.

Erikido,

On Easter Sunday, i made a trip outa town to a 9ball tournament, so i could play NEW people. Well i had hoped to be rated as low as possible, since nobody would know me, but of course the guy running the tourny, knew who i was and rated me as a "B" now i did take 4th place which was nice, even though it only payed top 3.

But, the experience alone was nice, i ran into a couple D players who if you gave them a decent shot, would run out 75% of the time. So i quickly began to play very smart.

The nice thing about the tournament was it was LOSER breaks, so even if you did run into a A or A+ player you didnt hafta worry about being thier lil rack bytch lol. It was also 3foul rule too.

The two matches i lost, one was my first match, i was playing another "B" player and just missed too many key shots on the 6 or 7 ball. And the other guy i lost to who ended up winning was also a "B" player and hill-hill i had a tough cut shot on the 8ball which was behind the 9ball, and completely missed the 8ball. But i also missed a 9ball earlier in the match too.

Now i came away from the tournament, actually happy, because i knew i played better than i had in any tournament in my home town. Where i get rated lower.

Would i go back to this outa town tourny? HELL YEA!!!!!!! And the nice thing was i got to talking to several of the guys and they were just like me, easy going, liked to play, gamble a bit, and we even joked about stuff that had happend to us in the past too.

Gerardo is a terrific player, one of the better west coast players. A few years ago, Gerardo played a young guy, a lower "A" player, spotting him 2 games in a race to 7 in a double elimination USPPA tournament. The kid was nervous and missed his first couple of shots. He lost badly to Gerardo, winning only one game. He felt horrible. Afterward, we discussed the match. The kid had a solid game. I told him he needed to just play his game and not think about the outcome.

The next day, they met in the losers bracket, and the kid beat him. He played better, got a few rolls, and did to Gerardo what Gerardo did to him the day before.

Those first couple of shot and safe opportunities are critical in 9 ball short races. You have to be especially focused when you get those early opportunities. If you make mistakes against someone like Gerardo in a short race, you won't get more than a couple of chances.

Thanks that is good advice. I was watching the rocket and hohman(sp?) play and the rocket said something like that. He said that he was in a slump earlier and he realized it was because he was thinking too much about winning. He started thinking more about just having fun and it got him out of it. Watching that match yesterday was very motivating. I hadn't got to see top level players like that play in a long time.
