I'm not shoting the messenger at all, but I think with Kevin it might be a case of "too little - too late". He had the opportunity to protect the players during the first go round and he laughed at it and boldly chose not to. He openly and publicly chastised the people that encouraged the players to protect themselves. After everything the players have been through, I'm not so sure that many of them would ever trust him again. I am interested in seeing what he has to offer, and my offer still stands on organizing something designed to protect the interests of the players.

i know SVB from only talking on the phone with him, i'm impressed, he was going to meet up with Jay and me in Vegas a while back but it didnt work out, we will in Dec. and yeah I'll help SVB he is a good guy on the right track.

Pool might have a shot at comming back....somewhat. Here is why...

The ecomnomy is getting tough, we have gas going up at the pumps in the winter its been over 20 ears since thats happened, it awalys goes up in the spring before everyone takes off, interest rates are low so they cant lower them much more to off set the slow down created by high oil prices etc etc...es i did have alot of economic classes I failed in college but dosent mean i didnt learn anything i just got bad grades, i had other prioritys...pool.


ok Fatboy where you going with this? well since I beelieve were in for tough times, people wont be able to buy new cars and hang out in car clubs, buy boats, travel as much etc. And pool is a cheap local easy form of recreation, granted we have been seeing alot of pool room closed down that dosent mean the tables that were in them are going to disappear, there will be new pool rooms open in lower rent areas, hell rents might drop a little. all these factors might just might bring a few people back to pool that were out doing other more expensive things the past 10-15 years.

The poker fad seems to be losing steam too, and that hurt pool, darts, you name it it took ALOT of people away from other activitys there is only 24 ours a day for each of us, and how we spend them depends on how were holding, believe me I have been on both ends and pool aint gonna die, i believe that when pool was strongest was during the depression. well?????

It's the casinos, man. They're vacuum cleaners. They take all of the pool player's extra cash. Also the "suckers" don't have to put up with being ridiculed into playing pool and can simply go off at the casinos without embarassment or peer pressure.

It's not just the suckers either. It is the average everyday American who used to play pool but now chooses to throw their discretionary funds down the casino toilets. It's the same with the Poker players. They think they can fade the rake but in actuality they can't. They think its just a better bet than the pool room and they're just plain wrong. At least in the pool hall, you can often change the odds by simply requesting they be changed.

exactly i just used more words. i'd rather have a good economy but who wouldnt? so I'll play pool til things turn around. i'm sick of work anyways no matter what I'm gonna stop with the grind in a year anyways and make alot less $$$ but thts cool I want to chill, stress and long life dont mix well.

thats why Vegas has awalys been bad action at the pool rooms, however there is some $20-$100 action now that was almost non-existant in the earily 90's.

There was a card room 75 yards from a pool room I played at for 6 months, and I would squeeze a $50 set out of someone and 2 hours later watch them betting thousands at pai gow. The would fire everything on a stupid game and then not bet the tip money playing pool. It was impossible to get someone from the card room over to the pool room even if I offered them the nuts. now with Casinos in damn near every state that will awalys hurt pool, when it was jusr NV and AC with casinos action was better at pool rooms.

I can see pool coming back the way you mention it, but with some help. First of all, we would need a GOOD pool movie. Not Stickmen, not Poolhall Junkies, but something of the Hustler's status that brings some hype with it and gets people into the movie theaters.

The problem could be the fact that there's a lot more entertainment at home these days. High school kids with a Netflix account can stay home with their friends and have a few good movie nights a week. On demand cable, prime time tv shows on dvd, and the now-affordable new video game systems are all also cheap entertainment. Pool halls aren't all that cheap either. You go to the poolhall with your buddies and you'll probably have a few beers. They aren't as expensive as clubs when it comes to drinks, but it'll cost you more than buying a 12 pack at Publix and hanging out at home.

To get a significant boom for pool you need a few things. A movie, a good solid tour, and a reality show wouldn't hurt. The timing needs to be right to draw enough people in.

As for me, I bought a big old LCD tv and an XBox 360 to get through the tough times. My fridge always has beer and most of my friends live close to me.

I agree with Joey in that its easier to go off @ poker & Casino action. No embarrassment & you go home broke & happy!. I remember when golf stole suckers by the droves from poolrooms. Why not go out & get a little excersize, blow your cash & feel like you got healthy. Pool needs to concentrate on characters. When I lived in SF @ Cochrans everybody had a nickname & it was a pleasure to lose to these "Characters".

You should have seen what my cold did to my game tonight , i couldnt run 3 balls in a row, wow it was bad, real bad. But its tempoary I'll be fine in 2-3 days I can tell, i slept on/off all day.

i'm a "character" no doubt about that, for better or worse, and I started in 85 and there were a few left then, so I have a little understanding of what you are saying, but what we really need are Charcters with heart that will step up and play not knowing if they have the best or worst of it and gamble-not get robbed like if I played Tang Hoa even, that is stupid. recently I have (other than tonight) been taking the worst of it in Vegas in small action $20-$100 and lost a little boroke even and won a little, i'm over all loser maybe $200, but my rail bets on SVB will cover that for years, No one wants to get out of line and take a shot anymore in pool rooms, they want a lock or they go to a casino and get robbed and feel good about it, that is weak and those men have no "charcter or heart", neither do the guys who are locksmiths, at one point in my life i had to be I was busted. But when I got pumped up i would take a shot and some times it would come in. Thats the mentality a real pool player has reguardless of their skill level.

If you are agressive at all trying to match up, they think you are trying to put something over on them. Since I advertised "Old Man Looking for Action" on here and on onepocket.org a few months ago, I am probably stuck a thousand or so. It could have been more but getting them to bet, even when they might have the best of it is like pulling teeth. I am not a high roller but will play any living human that gives me anything resembling a fair game some $50/$100 one pocket. If they are a stranger, I will bet at least $50 a game and find out how they play on the table, not run around and see if I have the nuts. I went to Hard Times in Sacramento last week and there was a stranger who said he was from Arizona who wanted to play some one pocket. He would only start it off for $10 a game. Since I have had limited opportunities to play lately and only had about three hours, I agreed. We both stalled like crazy at first and it was obvious it was a close game. We finally played the last game for $20 and I ended up winning $40 and paid $28 in time. He was a good player and a good guy to play with and I enjoyed the game because I haven't had a chance to play lately, but I didn't spend 50 years learning how to play pool to play for $10 a game and I don't drive 50 miles to the pool room to sit on the bench. I'm like you, I don't mind taking a little the worst of it to get a little action, but my pride won't let me just give it away, which is what you almost have to do to get them to bet anything.
