Negatives of Ivory Ferrules, well here is the view point on them and a few other cue making materials used in the beginning days and now!, from the owner of Joss Cues......:)

The wood is the same you just have to look harder and buy more to select through.
Adhesives are Far, Far better than back then. Tips were put on with hide glue. If you had your cue where the humidity was high your tip would SLIDE off.
Joints were glued on with a prayer to the pool god Luther Hoppsconi. Didn’t always work.
The best tip then was the Champion or Crown. These are still top tips but there are a great many better tips out there now.
Ferrules were always ivory then. Ivory cracks and chips but was and is one of the best playing materials around. Some of the newer materials play as good as ivory but are far stronger.
