I miss Whitey!!

I took up the game/sport again about 3 years ago after a lay-off of more than 25 years. I love it more than ever. But there's one thing I miss:

A WHITE CUE BALL!!!

All the cue balls I see nowadays are, at best, off-white. Some look downright yellow! It makes me sad every time I think about it.

In the "old" days, cue balls were much, much whiter. I don't know what material they were made of back then, but they didn't seem too much different than the phenolic balls of day. But they were white! And they were beautiful!

Anybody else feel that way?

Back in your period, the balls were made out of clay. The virgin clay was bleached using a 3-step bleaching process lending itself to a more natural white. Today's balls are synthetic and manufacturers are unable to reproduce that virgin clay whiteness.

the elephant practice balls have pure white in them

The elephant practice balls, although supposedly "cheap"
inferior-quality imports, have pure white in them. I'm talking
about the set that has a half-red/half-white ball, and a white
ball with a black stripe and red circle and dot.

They make my cue ball look yellowish, as they are have really
pure white material.

Actually, I began using the measles cue ball right after they came on the market. I prefer it over cue balls that look like they're nicotine-stained. At least they have a reason to be other than pure white!

You'd think that manufacturers would be able to produce a truly white cue ball, wouldn't you? How hard can it be!?
