In my experience, cues are like instruments and woods can be mutable. I have hit with cues from the same maker that had a familiar character, but were of a different spectrum of "tone". Even two production cues of the same model will not have the exact same hit.
To be brutally honest, whenever you come across that one cue that has that undeniable hit that appeals to you, go to whatever lengths you can to make it yours. Such opportunities can be many years (or even once in a lifetime) in the making.
