my dilemma is this........i have an image in my mind as to what my pool "shot" should look like. I come into stance.....i smoothly take a few practice strokes close to what I imagine my shot should be, aiming and zeroing in the whole time, then I let it go. Ok it seems when I do that, I miss, miss horribly, completely get out of my game and want to kick my dog.

ok tonight i got into a 4 man 10ball game and shot the lights out, running out numerous racks and even stringing together 3 consecutive 10ball runouts break to break to break. During tonights pool session how was I shooting? I would slowly melt down into shooting position with my cue straight out towards the cb, lining everything up......then taking 2 very slow very tedious practice strokes and shooting and I couldnt miss. Its great to shoot with this kind of result, but it doesnt "feel" right. Will some of you higher ranked shooters share your setup and shot routine with me?

It doesn't feel right because you're used to doing everything wrong. How do I know this? Because you said you were shooting the lights out but you don't know why. The way to play pool is to be smooth. By smooth, I don't just mean your stroke, I mean everything. Stroke smooth, get up smoothly, chalk your cue smoothly, waltz around the table smoothly, get down into your stance smoothly, make your rythm smooth. Imagine that you are a piece of silk, just relax and be smooth. You must incorporate this awkwardness that you describe into your natural game. Your entire body except for your stroking arm should be rock-solid, and I mean absolutely, completely still. To achieve this, you must have perfect balance. Keep doing what you are doing, until you don't even have to conciously think about it when you are shooting. To play great pool, when you are shooting, you must be thinking about nothing.

Remember this phrase- "ice on the mind and oil on the arm, not oil on the mind and ice on the arm"

Good luck.

This might sound corny, but worked for me...

When I first started seriously practicing, my entire game got practice. What do I mean?

Well, my approach to the table got practice till it got natural.

My shot selection got practice till it got natural.

My tip-to-cueball position got practice till it got natural.

My sighting got practice till it got natural.

My entire game got practice till it got natural.

Can you guess what the common thread is in all the above examples? You guessed it.

Practice... Practice till the lights go out. Then when they come back on... guess what.

Practice some more.

Sounds to me the reason why is because that Schon shaft is working just fine and you don't need to be spending money on a so called "super shaft".

Sounds to me like your mind was defeating you before you even took the shot. You were over thinking and it was overwhelming your natural skill to the point where you counteract yourself. As Nike's slogan says: Just Do It.

Sometimes thinking to much is not beneficial.

i was using my old meuci sneakypete so HA!!!!! lol

i hear what you guys are saying and I realise it to a point. I felt smooth and relaxed and extremely focused, i just feel like my mechanics arent right. I guess part of the problem is i want my pool game to just flow and last night the game felt forced. I think as soon as i can get thru tax season im going to try to get a lesson with someone close by here in the southeast like archer or grady.
