I played Strickland last night at Babineau's

So I’m in N. Carolina and went to Babineau’s Billiards for some pool and grub. Paul, the owner, gives me free table time and anyone who wants to can jump on the table. I’m playing this guy Rodney who shots pretty good and we trade a few games back and forth before he shows his real speed and just destroys me. He leaves and I ask him his last name and he tells me “ I’m the second most famous Strickland in NC”.

Babineau’s Billiards is the place to play in Raleigh. I arrived about 6:30 PM and there was only one table open. Paul Babineau is a great host/owner/businessman. Paul showed me to a table and we chatted a little bit about his leagues and specials. Mondays ladies play free and there were plenty there.

Paul Mon~~~~going back for more punishment

Rodney is one of several players in Raleigh who might well have done the same thing. Jimmy Faircloth is known to be at Babineaus from time to time. Johnny Griffin puts in some time there. BJ used to show up from time to time. It's rare to go in there and not find some very fine players.

And you are right. Paul runs a very nice room. And when Cindy (Paul's decidedly better half! ) is in the kitchen, the dining experience is just as good (or better!) than the pool experience.

i was there!

that's funny, I stopped by there last night late and it looked there wasn't much going on. Usually there's at least a good ring game going till closing, but not last night. guess I missed the action

No action at Babineaus

Sorry you couldn't get any action last night. Earlier in the evening I hosted my APA 9 ball and Masters Leagues. 12 nineball teams and 8 masters. Masters usually finish early with the high level of play. I own the place and i've always felt like action at Babineaus is like shooting fish in a barrel. (For some of u oldtimers. Come back any time, earky is better and maybe I can hook you up with a little action. Thanks for coming in.

im gona have to make a trip down there from Richmond..i am from Victoria Va origanlly which is close to Southhill Va. I used to go to Brass Tap all the time...glad to hear there is a new place to try out..see ya there

Just came back from a week long visit to Cary NC. Babineaus is definitely the place to play. I would love to have a room like that up here. Drink Prices were good, Food was great. Tables were in great shape. I hope to get back there next time I'm Down.

I am glad that you finally acknowledged that it is cindy that actually runs the place and she is the reason for the success of that place.paul just sits there eating all the food cooked by cindy. pooltchr we went thru this before.
by the way Rodney thinks that he is a hustler but I do not think he has all that.

Cindy is the boss

Vagabond you are right on when it comes to Cindy being in charge. I do everything she says without question. Withour her guidance I would surely be out of business by now. I would not classify Rodney Strickland as a hustler, but he is well above average. Probably a 9 maybe a 10 on his best day.

Not one, but TWO anonymous potshots! Impressive....

You know what would be more impressive - not hiding behind a screen name when you talk shit.

I'm curious. I played in the APA Masters tourney in Vegas last year, and my team played "Dream Team Raleigh". The guy I played was named Rodney (didn't catch his last name). He was about 5'10", average build, maybe early 30's. May have had a goatee? Real nice guy, strong player. I'm curious if this is the guy you were playing with. I had a chance every game in 8-ball but choked so I lost 4-1. In 9 ball, I was able to go 3-3 with him, but too little too late. I lost 7-4, and my team ended up losing to those guys. Great players, though.

That was my team - Rodney, Dave Edmunds, Steve Lee, and me. I couldn't play because I had broken my collarbone just two weeks before the tournament (if you noticed an Asian guy with his arm in a sling cheering his teammates on, that was me). We ended up in 5th place. Play2Win, also out of Raleigh, won the Masters event, taking down Jason Kirkwood's team in the final.

Babineau's is the home room for both Play2Win and Dream Team Raleigh.

What brand of tables, size, cloth, lighting, etc. Smoking?

From what I saw, the front room had 9ft gold crowns, the back had a few gold crowns, a medalist, and an amf playmaster. All 9 ft. Cloth was either simonnis or a simular type cloth. I've only been there once though.:D

Thank You David

I appreciate all the cudos which have been thrown my way. We may very well have the stongest APA Masters League in the country. With a first and fifth place finish last year in Vegas we are definitely a force to be reckoned with. What is it they say about publicity? " No such thing as bad " . Don't mind being dinged every once in a while. Just keeps me on my toes and most of the time is meant as good fun. Thank you everyone for helping make my fifteen minutes of fame an enjoyable one.

Babineau's Configuration

12- 9' GCIV
2- 9' AMF Playmasters
1- 9' GCIII
1- 9' Medalist

Food, all Alcohol permits, darts, poker (you dont even know they are here) and some of the cutest waistaff around.

Thanks Again

Hello David, it's Keith. I agree with you. It's easy to sit on the computer and talk about "not being all that." I'd say no matter what this guy's speed is, he can get played. In Raleigh area alone, Robert Ray, Leroy Bryant, Faircloth, Baranski, Dennis, Strickland, Little Chris, Lee, BJ, aka Pokey, One Pocket Jerry, and quite a few others hit'em quite well. I don't play that much, now, but I might try a few myself for the cash. As far as poolrooms go... I've been all over the east coast below Maryland/DC area and this place is kept up and is just plain full of pool, if you know what I mean. Not everywhere gambles like they used to, but come out of hiding and give us or me a call.
