Don't wanna sound at all smug, but I've risen two APA 8-ball SLs in 3 weeks.

I'm pretty pleased :)

Now just need to keep up the standard...

The strangest thing is my team captain is definitely a better player than me but he's rated an SL below. How does that work??

he's smart enough to keep his skill level down so that the team can stay together.

you'll probably be looking for a new team in the next session or two.

How many matches have you played in the APA? If you don't have 20 matches in yet, expect that your SL will move around untill your best performances average out.

With that Said congratulations.
