i have a friend or two who i will play super cheap sets..........we are friends, we arent looking to take each others money......so 5$ a game of one pocket........or race to 5 for 5 or 10 in 9ball......basically enough for the winner to cover his table time. But thats as cheap as i can go lol. Occasionally ill have a banger who wants to play me for free, or theyll offer to pay my time.....if i like them ill do it but i dont like to, id really rather practice than do that. Playing bangers just seems to be bad for my game, im not concentrating as much, its hard for me to take too seriously, it just seems to take the edge off my game.
I agree with your sentiments, wholeheartedly. The key to this is whether whomever you play will give you their "best" game. Actually, the idea of the "best" game is somewhat difficult to define, but, for argument's sake, let's say they'll play you a really tough game. If that's what they're doing, their speed is somewhat irrelevant. If they really are doing their best, and not just slamming balls around, it's worth the game, normally at least. Even when the game is obviously not up to par, if they are really playing their best, and it's very simple to figure out if they are, it's worth playing them, most of the time.
I don't care how good a player is, I'm going to learn from the match. Either from good shots or from bad ones.
If they're just slamming balls around, not interested. But even if their game is really poor, if they're trying, and laying some safes and so on, let's go at it!
By the way, among "players" I'm mediocre at best, but I'll do my best to win, and make the game tough for them. That is something that's usually within my abilities. And who knows, if I win, it's good for me and for them too. For them, because next time they'll probably realize they have to bear down.
Last week a friend told me "I can see we're not playing friendly sets anymore.." Music to my ears!
