I thought Thorpe was on a ban?

in all real pro sports the participants have rules and standards to follow. that is the way it is, and should be.

if he wants to go his own way that's fine. but don't expect the sport to let him in under his rules of conduct.

The funniest part of all this is that there was a long thread a while back about his supposed offence & suspension, but no actual statement, link, or news of it was ever produced - just speculation & pontificating by the AZB yenta crowd based on some social media drivel. I could care less about any of it, but find it hilarious how folks get worked up with strong opinions about an event or issue when there are zero facts known... Of course that pretty much sums up modern life.

Mike at Billiards Digest reported it,. which is as close as our sport gets to a paper of record.

Oh yeah? Well I'm not exactly the most glued into pool news, so if that's true then perhaps there is more to it - can you provide an article link or any more info for us? I never saw anything in that older thread, even when a few folks asked for verified links/references. Google searches yield nothing except these AZB gossip threads, which in turn seem to based on 3rd party snippets of SM ramblings.

There is a link to the Facebook video where Mike discusses what the WPA told him. Obviously something was incorrect, but I think his statements led to the fervor you saw in the threads.

Thanks for the info.
FYI I have messaged the WPA on numerous occasions and have never received a reply.
Most recently it was about sanctioning 2 events where the dates clash.
You ain't going to get a response on the event clash and why Matchroom was allowed to get away with. It will be interesting to see today's podcast of Emily to see if Molina asked her (he asked Daz yesterday).

Right, that is the video. He said he got a letter from WPA that he had a failed drug test. Nothing on punishment and it was up in air. Is it really a coincidence that right then Billy disappeared from any WPA sanctioned events. Now that he shows up is pretty a much a year since the failed test at last year's Vegas Open so maybe it was a one year ban. Whatever.

That was more like 5 mo ago, but agreed - whatever. Bottom line no one really seems to know but everyone has strong opinions on it all. Rock on ✌. I’ve exceeded my AZB time allocation for this month, it was stimulating to say the least

Just out of curiosity, is there some drug that has been proven to give an edge in pool?

Asking for a friend.

But seriously, drug-testing in pool seems like a perverse violation of individual freedom. What drug is going to make someone a better pool player? It seems like this is just inspired by a lust for power and control. Maybe they should drug test the drug testers.

Maybe it took that long for the WPA to follow up on their original letter that there was no ban.

Adderal or any of the other ADHD meds to help w/ focus. Any sort of stimulant to help someone stay up late or get ready early. Flip side could be marijuana for someone prone to getting overly nervous in competition. to help them relax

These all sound like medicinal treatments, no?

So are they discriminating against people with ADHD who use ADHD medications, and discriminating against people with anxiety disorders who use cannabis to alleviate their anxiety? If so, what does that say about them?

IDK (or care) what their rules or intentions are. You just asked for examples of potentially performance-enhancing substances in pool. Those came to mind.

rules are rules. complaining about them is fine.
but if you decide to participate plan on abiding by them.

"My friend" says, "pseudo ephedrine in conjunction with a head cold improves my speed control to perfect. This causes me to believe it doesn't take much intellect to do pool. Too much intellect is also probably the root of the general dog show in sports."

Aspirin grade opioids oops I mean "Aspirin grade opioids also work in a similar fashion."

LOL - now I just need to figure out how to get a head cold.

Do they test for pseudoephedrine?

If pool pros sold food supplements, the claim is for performance enhancing effects. Does a placebo product count? think a sports drink but for the the pool community.

Fair enough, but it makes me wonder if they also outlaw taking medicine.

No antibiotics, because it's easier to play pool if you don't have an infected wound. No aspirin, because it's easier to play pool if you don't have a headache.
