I wonder if Dale Perry uses dealers anymore.

I see how well Dale Perry cues sell on ebay (because they are very nice looking, and probably very popular to the younger players and league players out there), and it seems like a sure thing when it comes to reselling them for a profit (if you can get them for cheap enough through DP to be able to make a profit).

But I am thinking that DP probably does not have dealers anymore for his cues, or maybe he is so hated by the dealers in the billiard industry (because of what he did to them in the past) that nobody would want to be a dealer for his cues ever again.

And even if you could be a dealer for his cues, could you possibly be able to make a profit from reselling his cues?

Just curious about your thoughts on this.

On a different note, I am curious about your thoughts on any good Chinese (or Philippine) cue makers that would be good to become dealers for?

Is there any profit in dealing in new production cues these days?

Thanks for your thoughts about this.

Well, I think that DP used to be a cue maker that only made pretty high end custom cues, and the prices that dealers were paying (at dealer cost) was still a very high price for his custom cues. Then one day (without warning), DP starting building cues is pretty high volume, and selling them on ebay. Anyway, this made the new unsold DP custom cues that the dealers had in their dealers cases worth much less then their dealer cost was, and I assume that the dealers lost a lot of money. Anyways, I think that DP was at one time a good cue maker that made really nice one of a kind custom cues. An old friend paid around a $1,000 back in the 90's to have DP build him a custom cue to his specs. I imagine that DP still builds one of a kind custom cues(that are not to be auctioned off on ebay, and are to a customers specs), but not sure if they are of the same quality that they were back in the 90's.

If they are of the same quality I would say that his quality back then was horrible. He makes the worst shafts of any cue I've ever used.

One thing I've said time and again concerning billiard products is to buy quality. If this means waiting an extra six months or a year I highly recommend you do that. You will be far happier in the end.

Do you want to satisfy your urge now, or do you want to wait a little bit and satisfy your desire?

I haven't looked at DP ebay listings in a long time, but there used to be another company selling DP cues at a slight premium but you got to choose something like shaft diameter or such.

I'm not sure if anything has changed with his eBay cues, but I chose a shaft diameter with one I bought from him on eBay about 7 years ago

I've owned worse, but the Ebay cues look awful, even for 100 bucks,
For instance I have a vintage Cuetec with 6 gold skull & crossbone inlays, and a Thunderbolt shaft
The original owner used a knife to scratch her name & phone # into the forearm.
She was able to do it without damaging any of the inlays, which was impressive but
may of devalued the cue from a collectability standpoint>

There is probably a couple of brokers buying & reselling DP cues.

Well, I have ordered 3 of his cues through ebay auctions in the past, and I was extremely unsatisfied with all of them, and quickly returned them for a refund. The shaft taper in his shafts is mainly what I was so unhappy about, and that 1st cue I ordered from his was a sneaky pete, and was really unhappy with the way it played, and later on I found a big crack (that opened up) in the butt cap (which DP blamed me for when he received the cue back from me). They sell for so cheap on ebay that I just kept wanting to give them another try, but on 2 more occasions I was really unhappy with the cue I received directly from DP, and one of the cues was around $350 I think (was my winning bid), but the shaft was really horribly tapered on it, and I did not want to have to pay $30 or $40 to get it tapered to the way I might have been happy. I did find a DP in a pawn shop for a $100 that came with one of his better tapered shafts, and I really did like the way that cue played, and I ended up trading that cue for another older pre ebay DP cue (with the uni lock joint on it), and I really loved the way that cue played. Anyways, I understand that his ebay cues may look ugly to a lot of people out there, but I do really like the woods that he uses in his cues. But it is sad that he does not used better cue making methods, and better glue, because I have read a lot about his cues falling apart over time. His cues really do sell very well on ebay for the $100 to $200 price range though.

Thanks for your thoughts about this.

Maybe dealers don't rep him. By selling on ebay he is essentially competing against any dealer who would want to sell his cues. What do you do if you deal his cues at $xxx and he sells his on ebay for less?

I never give the Dale Perry cues a second look on ebay, mainly because he seems to mis-represent his cues as being high end collectibles when in fact they are simple production cues.

He has a small set of standard design elements which he mixes and matches to create what he calls 1/1 cues - nothing could be further from the truth. He used that same butt inlay on a hundred other cues, same with the forearm work, he just varied the woods and/or the inlay materials a little bit. Nothing special. Certainly nothing unique.

I mean to say, does it make a cue a true 'custom, 1 of 1" when all that is changed from one cue to another is the color of the forearm inlay? No, I do not accept that as custom work at all

So when I hear they neither play well nor are very durable, I am glad I never took a chance on one of his unique, custom, so-called "1 of 1" original creations".

Also, a few years ago he had a rather nice looking signarture, now - not so nice, rather a scribble I think.

Dale Perry Rules

I bought Dale Perry cue on ebay in 2007 and still use it to this day. Rolls true hits great. Ive bought a Cuetec, Meucci, MeDermott, since because I see all these stupid posts that there are better cues out there.

While I am pool player not cue collector, I would put my $100 DP up against any other cue in the $100-$400 range. Is it a Schon or a some $1000 Custom No- but it is a nice feeling cue and gives me full confidence at the table.

*** I did buy another DP after that with a stage V shaft and it was kind of a lemon- but it looks nice so oh well
