ID numbers?

I was wondering why cuemakers and manufacturers don't all put some kind of ID number on their cues? Kind of like a VIN number on a car or serial number on a stereo or firearm? Is it just athetics?

Thanks!

I believe Joss was doing this on the stainless joint of the butt of their cues sometime over the past 10 years or so. I'm not sure if they still are, but they did at one time.

All of my Qs have an ID # on the flat, joint end of the shaft & on the butt cap, under the rubber bumper...JER

Many makers, both custom and production, put serial #'s on their cues. Many times it is hidden, or not very obvious. I know a guy who will only buy a cue if it has one, because he is a degenerate gambler, and is always pawning stuff. Apparently it is illegal in most states for pawn shops to buy or accept as collateral anything without a serial #.

Thanks folks. Yeah, after seeing the occasional post for a missing, stolen, or unidentifiable cue, it just seemed odd that so many cues, especially very expensive ones, do not have an identifying number somewhere on them.

The custom cue thing I totally understand is a customer driven market.

I feel a little helpless as far keeping an eye out for a stolen cue unless there is a feature that the police could identify at a glance. I'll carry a a few dozen numbers in my wallet around with me, but I'm not going to load up a bunch of pictures in my wallet. And furthermore, if I had a number of a stolen cue, and I saw a cue with the same number, I would definitely call the police. If I only had a picture and description that matched, I don't think that's enough to get the job done.

An RFID tag burried in the cue handle might be an excellent way to serialize cues.
