Cue makers, what is in your experience the ideal break cue butt material and construction and why? Follow up question, what do you think the best break butt on the market is currently? I'm interested in isolating the contribution of the butt only, and as much as possible mesurable qualities like power transmission rather than talk of "feel" etc

That is completely subjective! What would be idea to one person might be considered Trash to another person. I know folks who like extremely heavy break cues, many use medium weight 19 or 20 oz break cues, and one of the best 9 ball breakers that I have ever seen used a 15.5 oz house cue to break. So beauty is surely in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, I'm generally in favor of using a butt while breaking.

I asked specifically about material and construction. The weight is not a factor as it can be changed more easily than other parameters

I like a rubber grip, you can use a loose grip for maximum snap with no slipping. Other than that, I don't think construction makes much of a difference.

Todd is onto something when he says it's subjective. But you're asking what I think works well it wouldn't be too different from a playing cue. Same taper and dimensions. 3/8-10 modified pin in SS or Ti, phenolic joint collar and Purpleheart core, doesn't have to be laminated, obviously buttcap and joint collar threaded.
