Identifying newer Joss cues

I was under the impression that when a cue maker changes something on a cue, they change the model number too.

Why does the model 302 appear here and other American sites with a phenolic joint and a certain diamond pattern (a couple sites have this):

yet it appears on this German site with a stainless joint and diamonds on a black band (the only site with this pic):

Either way I know it's discontinued but I'd like to find out what's what.

Joss stuff

When I was researching what Joss I liked 2 Christmases ago, I came across every pic and web page that I could find. Mr. Janes does different series cues for Europe and he also has slightly different series available to certain web suppliers here in the states. In what is available here in the states, there is also a series that is only available to one store/supplier.
My guess is that the German site has the same number but different trim ring/placement of diamonds due to the series being European. It was probably just easier to keep the same model number since they were similar inlays. Joss changes it up a lot. Keeping up with the previous American released cues can be found on the Joss site. Dan has the archives of dealer leaflets that show the year's models of cues. Hopefully that sheds a little bit of light on your issue.
If you see something you like, shoot Joss an email. They may make a custom order in your price range. It was my experience that you will not be able to get a "custom" with an internet discount of 20% that you see from sites like PoolDawg, Seybert's, and budgetcues (Budget Billiards).
Budget cues was one of the sites that offered the "extra" series of stateside cues. They are primarily offering Meucci cues, since they are the factory direct store, so to speak. They offer many nice cues.

Best of luck with your purchase. I hope this helped you out. Poke around on Joss's site. They have semi-customs on sale there ready to be shipped. (cues that are not the standard production cue design, but already made... you can also get true customs. no idea what the wait is)

I recently picked up a new production Joss from a dealer whom I've known for years and have absolutely no reason to distrust. The butt looks fine with serial number and logo however the shaft has no Joss logo. Is that normal?

My JOS 34 has no logo on the shaft. Once again, Joss changes things up a lot. The logo being on the shaft has gone through a cycle or 2 , if I am not mistaken. I don't know if they are now putting it on the shaft again or not.

You can register the butt serial number on Joss's site... if it is a fake then you will find out pretty quick. They were able to tell me where my cue shipped to from the factory and the cue weight when it left Joss.

There was an email Joss sent out a few months back about a Chinese fakes article listed in Billiards Digest I believe. It can't hurt to register your cue... if it is a knock off, you may want to consider getting some money back or a trade in, etc...If Joss finds out that the dealer knowingly sold a knock off, I would think that that is BAD business for the dealer. I bet they would pull the license. Ouch.
I wouldn't mention anything about where you bought it or suspect the legitimacy of it when you register it, unless it comes back as a fake. There is probably little reason to worry about a fake if there is a serial on the cue and you don't want to start troubles with the dealer on Joss's end without justifiable cause.

It should be fine. Either way, the cue is registered to you and with Joss when you use their site to let them know your cue's SN. You will also be on their mailing list. That is how I got the email about the knock off's a while back.

My cue turns out to be about 4 years old making it new old stock. After registering the serial #, Dan Janes emailed me back extremely fast and verified the info on the sales tag. He also said that currently, all Joss shafts have a logo on them but was not clear as to whether all shafts 4 years ago had the logo.

In any case, I'm glad it sat around because it's dead straight and I'm reasonably certain it won't warp now. That is one of my biggest fears. And yes, in order to not start any BS, I did not mention the name of the dealer. Joss evidently has excellent customer service.

It sounds like you got extra peace of mind on top of what you were worried about. The older wood sounds cool. It is always nice to get more than what you anticipated (when the news is good that is).
