If the lag is a skill shot, there's a better way

it is indeed a skill shot and part of the game. and since so many are 6 or 8 inches off the rail then it shows they don't either have good control or didn't practice the part of the game that gives a big first edge,

It is an ill conceived alternative……it is like pitching pennies so closest to foot rail wins……pool balls are meant to be hit into rails…..intended or accidental……a one way lag contest is just awful. How mandatory switching hands every other shot?

Why is it bad? Because it's different?

I’ve always wondered whether an advantage could exist related to who lags first (?) It’s like watching the start of a sumo match.

guy with the most expensive cue should start. This rule would be good for the industry
I like that idea. Unrelated... I just bought my 1986 Sport Craft K Mart cue from a buddy of mine for $9,676,412. I might have overpaid a little but I really liked the cue and now I always get to break first. 😂

Lagging is a skill. It is variable just like any other skill in the game. Nobody strikes it exactly the same every time for any shot including the lag. Then you have early match jitters etc etc. Everyone comes to the table for the lag in a slightly different headspace so there will always be variation from one lag to another. It's as fine a way as any to start a match and there's nothing wrong with it.

Side note: I recently brought it to my league operators attention that some players are deliberately stalling to gain an advantage. Waiting until the opponents ball is almost stopped to strike theirs. Has happened to me twice. First time I almost froze it so it didn't matter, second time though I got it to maybe the middle of the rack depth wise and the guy easily beat me. I didn't say anything at the time because I don't like to argue during matches unless it's a BIG deal cuz all it does is get in MY head.

No, your assertion is based on the false premise that the lag is a luck shot.

The lag is absolutely skill. Just being able to hit a pool ball is a skill. Being able to break at all is a skill. I can promise you, in a lag contest with Filler I would get WAXED. Is he just a more lucky person than I?

You’re coming up with a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

Lotto is luck. Shitting in balls is luck. The lag is not a shot of luck.
