If you could make your own tv show

With all the discussion focusing on getting better TV coverage lately, I started thinking: given a decent sized budget and creative control, what type of program would you create?

Here is my idea, what is yours?

My goal would be to get people interested in watching that normally do not watch pool on TV. The idea is to increase viewers and hopefully, eventually, interest in the game. I agree with other posters that gambling and pool’s more colorful characters should be emphasized. So, I would mix pool with reality TV. Really.

Get a group of top players, say about 10. Have them all start with a sizable stake, say $25k. Now, let pool hustlers be pool hustlers. The players are to match up until only one remains with the cash. Let the players match themselves up. This would give a good mix of games and spots and tons of wolfing and entertaining banter to film. The match up and play would take place over a couple of weeks providing enough material for a whole season of entertaining TV. If the players are not matching up and busting each other, the host can step in and get things moving. In the end there must be just one player with all the dough.

By filming not only the play, but also the negotiations there would be plenty of material for a competent editor to put together a show that is very entertaining for non-players. The interviews and hearing the players trash each other would be fun.

The players would pick there own games when they match-up. This would be interesting because we would get more than just 9 ball. Most people have never heard of banks or one-pocket and seeing these game would introduce something entirely new to an audience that thinks it already know the rules to pool. While you may think these games would not play well on TV, remember, we are creating entertainment, not true sports coverage. The games can be easily edited and speed up to make them more interesting. After all, do you really thing they show every hand from the WPT final table?

I am not sure I am explaining my idea very well, but hopefully you get the general idea. I really do think something like this would be popular.

They use to call that Johnston City......Now it's called Derby City. It would be better viewing than Survivor.Last man with the cash wins kinda thing.

I think that's a GREAT idea, incorporating the seedy side of pool (a large part of what makes pool interesting and exciting, as noted on another thread) with reality TV! Sounds like a winner for sure.

A while back I was toying with an idea for a documentary focusing on a handful of WPBA players (or UPA players, for that matter) for a week during one tournament. In the hands of the right director and editor this could be very interesting, maybe take two or three of the top, established players and a couple of lower-ranked but up-and-coming, hungry players and follow them around for the tournament - in their rooms between matches, in the bathroom during matches, in the bar after matches...capturing the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat and everything in between! (Only problem is, who'll want to produce it?)

This is a terrific thread, and it will be interesting to see some of the other ideas out there!

I think what spawned this thread might be the sudden rise in poker. When we watch poker on tv we think "I can get a flush draw and bait the pot" When people watch poker on tv they think that they would stand a chance playing in the same game they are watching. People who watch trivia game like jeapordy or millionare are really driven by waiting for questions they know the answers to. And thinking "If I were there than I would get this right and win."

Now what game in billiards might have the same effect.

The reality show conversation has been around for quite some time and it has spawned several good ideas. Kerry is not the first person to come up with her documentary idea and I am sure she will not be the last. I guess it will take someone to actually do it instead of talking about it, LOL. The money to produce it is also a problem.

While I like all the reality show ideas, I kinda feel like it is jumping on the band wagon. The hype of the reality will get people interested for a brief period only...look at the results of the other reality shows out there. Their ratings are not the same, several have been cancelled, and so forth. Don't get me wrong, I would watch a pool related reality show, but I think that a fictional drama might be better...at least to spur initial interest. The effect a good drama has makes a longer impression than a supped up reality show, IMHO. How many reality shows have lasted over 5 years compared to that of dramas? Face it guys, why do we watch reality shows? To laugh at the stupid people out there. I dunno if we should want pool to be portrayed as stupid. JMHO.
