If you had one accu-stats video

I was just telling someone else about this tape but, if you're interested in straight pool, there is a very good match between Dallas West and Mike Zuglan from the '92 US Open. Grady Matthews, Johnny Ervolino and Weenie Beenie are commentating. I liked it because I like the style of straight pool that Dallas West plays. He runs a 57, ends up with no shot (after the break shot), then runs 93 and out on his next inning. If you want to see a big run, also from the '92 US Open, there is a match between Sigel and Zuglan that is really good. Sigel runs 150 and really only gets into a little trouble twice.

Are any of the 14.1 matches available on DVD yet, I still can't beleive they use VHS tapes!!! Don't even think sony sells VHS recorders anymore!

Anyone from accu stats know when they are going to conver their catalogue to DVD?

Yesterday i wrote Pat Fleming and asked him whether they had any of the DCC action matches on tape. Like Efren v Joyner (not sure of the race or the $$) and Frost v Bustamente (race to 7 for 15k). Pat wrote me back and said that they did not record those because it was in the late evening and his staff had already worked a long day and had gone to bed. The tapes they use are 90 min long and there would have been no one to put in a new tape and there was no telling how long the matchups would have gone.

DOH!

Pat Fleming maybe could get someone to switch tapes for the tv table action matches at the 2007 DCC. I know I would sure volunteer to switch the tapes out if I was there. All I would want is to be able to buy one dupe of the master for my collection.

What would it be? I ask because at the moment I don't have a lot of spare budget for pool videos, and thus don't have a collection. But for my birthday, I got an IOU for one pool video. Given accu-stats' entire collection, what ONE video would you ask for?

Good question and here's my answer. I own over 100 accu-stats videos and i've been collecting them for years. I'm a big 9 ball fan and I also have many 1 pocket tapes also.

The best match i've ever seen (and i've seen a lot of them) was at the 15th US Open 9 ball Championship between Mike Sigel and Nick Varner with Buddy Hall and Grady Mathews doing the commentary.

Here's a brief description of the match: First the table was giving the corner ball on every break (the corner ball went in 21 times in a row for the whole match) and Mike Sigel won the lag and just took control of the match. Mike went up 9 games to 2 for Nick Varner and it looked hopeless for Nick to come back from 9 to 2 with Mike breaking and the corner ball going every time. Mike was playing superb and getting the first shot at the table, but at 9 to 2 Nick had a chance at the table and he ended up corner hooked. He studied the table and kicked a ball in to stay alive and during this same game he had to kick again and kicked another ball in and went on to win the game after kicking 2 balls in. Nick made a big comeback and the match ended up 10-10 with Nick running out and he got down to a straight in 9 ball in the side pocke after running out to win and he missed the 9 ball and the whole place went nuts. After Nick missed the 9 ball he got an unbelievable roll where the cue ball and the 9 ball froze together. Mike Sigel couldn't believe it and out of frustration he blasted the shot and the 9 ball went on the floor and gave Nick the win 11-10. What a match!!!

It is not going to be so easy to convert his catalog to DVD. Long ago on RSB there was an discussion about this. Somebody named Russ Chewning was advocating boycotting accustats until they moved to DVD. I posted in there some detailed info as to why it is difficult to move from his Beta and DV Cam master to DVD. Here is the link:

http://groups.google.com/group/rec...._frm/thread/35c3d9c1dfd9954f/b1a54032654aaa1c

There may be ways in 2006 for Pat to do a down and dirty conversion to dvd. Get the masters to a digital format and then throw a basic menu with 5 minute auto chapter points. I havent looked into this in a while but its certainly alot more possible nowadays than it was in 2002 when that RSB discussion went down.

TAP! TAP! TAP!

I watched this match, and I think Phil Capelle references this match in one of his books, for a 5 ball positiion shot that Sigel shoots, it was great.
Everyone in the room "sucked air" when Varner Stubbed his toe on the easy nine ball. I thought he was going to collapse. ;)

This is a GREAT match for sure. Varner in this match is a case study on attitude, composure and heart in pool. I love it at the end too when Varner does dog the nine you can see Pam Bell in the background and she is rooting hard for Varner. At that time they did the women's US Open at the same time as the men's. Viewed frame by frame you can see her just gasp in shock that Varner missed the match ball and then is relieved and smiles when the two balls roll together dead safe in the middle of the table.

I thought this match was my favorite until I saw the Grady/Hall PR match and then I gave that one the nod as it is one of the better learning matches. If your interested in Entertainment value only, I would agree that you have to give the nod to Varner/Sigel.

Unfortunately all of the tapes I listed except for Efren v Daulton are out of print.

Accustats ought to do something about that as they are just empowering the barter system and the black market by not having these tapes available for sale, let alone as DVDs.

Enzo is just like me...needs a 12 step program for his accustats addiction. :-)

wow, i didn't know this. i always thought you could get ANY match from pat. as it stands, yes, if you want to see certain matches, you may be forced to trade with somebody. wow, had no idea that was the case.

One of the truly entertaining matches ever filmed by Accu-Stats was a U.S. Open match between Keith McCready and Ismael Paez with Buddy Hall and Kim Davenport in the booth.

The play is less than stellar, but there is so much else going on both in the pit and in the booth that it is extremely entertaining.

The match goes hill-hill and the 9-ball lines up for an easy combo. Both players try a couple of things to get to it and finally Morro skulls the 1-ball in and DOGS the dead 2-9 combo. It was such a sure thing that AS freeze-framed Morro shooting the shot as their exit. They had to unfreeze and resume the match.

Keith gets up and runs out, the whole while talking, strutting, etc.

11-10 McCready

That match is a thing of beauty.

andam, vickery

i know andrew said he picked a match, but i remembered two i like a lot. andam vs varner at the us open, not sure what year. i really like andams game and it is very educational watching him move the cueball, especially on some of his safeties. varner ends up winning hill hill.

another favorite that fits this same description is hall vs vickery, sorry i dont have the year, but its sands and vickerys safties are nothing short of brilliant. he really emphasizes not just hooks, but world class impossible to hit the ob hooks, very educational.

to uwate, im still on the first step, admitting i have a problem. i dread step 8 i believe, where we'll have to give back or return borrowed or stolen tapes, lol (i think thats an actual step).

I was going through the 2006 catalog Accu-Stats and noticed how much more they use to cover. For instance, you can still order the 1992 US Open 14.1 and 9 ball. Also both Sands Regency events from 92 and the 92 Bicycle Club 9 ball is still available and even 13 different matches from Sang Lee's 92 3-Cushion International Open. These are pretty much the oldest ones available I think, except the ESPN World 9-ball from Sept. 1991. Pat use to have discount closeout sales and send me lists of matches that were about to be gone for good. He would even put in parentheses how many tapes of a particular match that he had left. I asked him when he first did this if it meant that they would be gone for ever and he said yes, that's what it meant.

Accu-stats has many great matches available, regardless if they're on VHS or DVD. Some of the matches that stand out in my mind are:

9-ball

1990 McDermott Masters VII: Strickland v. Mataya (finals) (OOP)
1991 Sands XIII: Rempe v. Varner (semi's) (OOP)
1991 Sands XIV: Rempe v. Archer (OOP)
1992 Rak 'M Up Classic: Howard v. Hall (OOP)
2001 Masters: Souquet v. Reyes (semi's)
2001 Masters: Strickland v. Reyes (semi's & finals both)
2005 U.S. Open: Frank v. Feijen

8-ball

2001 Invitational: Immonen v. Reyes
2001 Invitational: Archer v. Reyes
2001 Invitational: Bustamante v. Immonen

14.1

1992 U.S. Open: Sigel v. Zuglan
2000 U.S. Open: West v. Reyes
2000 U.S. Open: Souquet v. Reyes (semi's)

One-Pocket

1991 Legends: Cook v. Mizerak (OOP)
2004 Derby: Reyes v. Daulton

Short Rack Banks
