Easiest way to know is by how much pressure you have to exert on the sides to get it to cut... IF you have to push it hard enough that you can see the tip try to lean away from the blade any at all you are going to get heat build up and need to swicth to a new blade... I know Guido Orlando uses a cutter and not a razor blade but he said he straps the fool out of it before jumping on one of the softs or mediums....
Finishing off with the sandpaper shouldn't introduce too much heat and should get it close to what Palmetto's looks like in the photo with lots of spit and shinola....
