improving stroke

The guidelines for strokes seem pretty Straight forward, but I see lots of deviation from the perpendicular forearm strike on the cue when shooting. Most players seem to have the forearm slightly forward of vertical on contact. I am one of them. How much energy should I put into correcting this? I am returning to play after 18 to 20 years of not even occasional play.

I read that setting up and just shooting cue ball into corner pocket while practicing stroke would help, but with out a partner, how do I know the arm is really perpendicular? Thx, John

A mirror can work very well. Set it up to your right side, if you shoot right handed. When you get into your set position, a quick look to your right can show you if your grip hand is under your elbow.
Video cameras are even better, although they take a little more effort to set up.

Is it worth it? That depends on you. Are you the kind of person who will settle for "good enough", or are you always striving for perfection?
I can tell you that once you reach a certain level, it is no longer the big things that hold you back, it's the little things. This may seem like a little thing right now, but it is easier to fix it now, rather than wait. The day will come when those little things are tripping you up. That is an easy one to avoid. Fix it now, so it won't become an issue later.
