There are a bunch of places to play. Here is the rundown of the local tournaments:
Sunday: Sunset Billiards. I think its handicapped 8ball but I'm not sure, could be 9ball. Field likely to be under 20, maybe even under 10. Starts at 7:30 practice at 6:30. Entry: ? but likely to be $15.
Monday: Handicapped 9ball at Bird Bowl. $15 entry i think. Not sure about the field or the start time. Call to find out.
Tuesday: Hollywood billiards Handicapped 9ball. $15 entry. starts at 8 practice starts at 7. This is the best weekly tournament, you will likely see all the top shooters and have a fields around 25-35. They sometimes get 40+
late night tournament use to run on South beach at a bar called the The Lost Weekend. Its started at midnight and as i recall was winner take all $10 entry. Ive never gone, much too late for my working joe ass.
New wave Billiards in Miami has a handicapped 9ball tournament on Tues. Field is usually somewhere between 16-30. $10 entry starts at 830 practice at 730.
Wed:Handicapped 8ball at New Wave. $10 entry starts at 830 practice at 730. field will most of the times approach 20-30.
Thurs: Handiapped 9ball at inside billiards. field is small like maybe 10-20. $15 entry i think but im not sure.
Doral billiards has a tournament on thurs too. I think its 9ball but im not sure. Its handicapped as well. Start time is probably 8. Never been so not sure, but i heard the field is like 10-20 usually.
As far are room quality I would rate the miami rooms:
1) Sharpshooters. I like the equipment, the owners and the patrons. All gold crowns 1 and 2s. Simonis. They use to have a great thurs tourny here but it died. No current tourny there. (Big thumbs down). You might find a cheap game here but large action really just happens at Hollywood.
Bird Bowl/ New Wave/ Inside Billiards/ Doral are all about the same. Mostly B and C players, not alot of action for A players. Go on tournament nights only or you might not see any players above a B.
Sadly, the miami room Pegs pocket, where I learned to play pool and where there use to be great action daily is pretty much worthless now for visiting players. Your chances of getting played here for a soda are great but it gets the thumbs down...way down.
The best room by far from a pool players perspective is Hollywood Billiards. The owners there love the game and love the action. Decent sized ahead sets go down fairly regularly there and if there is road action in town, it will be found there. Go on Tuesday nights for sure as its tournament night. Tough field, you better play good if you plan on trying to match up.
I know nearly all the tournament directors for the miami events as well as hollywood. PM me if you want any of their phone numbers to call them with Q's about their weekly events.
For someone who doesnt play much, I still like to know whats going on in town. EVery day that goes by I am resembling more and more those old fart railbirds I use to wonder when I was a kid why they came but didnt play.
