Hello, I would like to get some feedback on a replacement tip for my lomax break cue with a samsara tip. I am staying away from phenolic tips due to lack of chalking ability with phenolic.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I play with the samsara and i absolutely love it! It breaks and jumps great!

I highly recommend it!

Thanks for the tip review post Cornerman, but not sure what to believe about the hammerhead tip. There are posts which talk about only being able to apply center ball hit, otherwise miscues and does not hold chalk. I am leaning toward the taom 2 tip, but wish to get other peoples opinons.

Thanks.

White Diamond, or a CA soaked, and pressed Triangle should do nicely. Maybe a Superpro as well. Good luck.

Why are you moving away from the samsara?

I have that on mine and love it. Also like the fact that since I play in a bar, I can break my breaker down & use the jumper as a short stick as well with the samsara tip.

I can't imagine why you'd only have to hit the Hammerhead with centerball. I've not miscued with the Hammerhead yet, but I haven't hit a zillion break shots with it yet

I use the Hammerhead, it doesn't hold chalk very well, I break off centre about half a tip with no problem.

I have a Hammerhead on my Mezz, I don't bother chalking anymore and still don't have miscue problems.

Half a tip, thats not much. I like breaking from the side and if I dint hit low the cue ball flys off the table every time.

I can break and run 9 ball with my BK3 with Hammerhead tip. I don't have the slightest hesitation hitting tons of english and table length draw. I can assure you that off center hits are not a problem. I make sure like once a month or so, I just do like one or 2 turns with like 120 grit sandpaper. That's plenty to keep a decent surface on the tip. I've had a Hammerhead on for quite a while now, since whenever I posted that tip review. No issues, extremely few miscues, and fantastic breaks.

Hope this helps,

Funny how each player has their own preference for break tips like they have in cues.

I for one didn't like the Hammerhead tip that much at all as I wrote in my review. I just dont feel comfortable breaking with one  Darren praised them a while back though so there must be something about it that works for some players.
I personally like Taom better, it is a solid all around tip that I feel confident breaking with :)

But as it tends to be in these tip threads it is ultimately up to each individual what works for them. The best we can do is give our own opinions on them, even though they seem to vary a great deal from each other
Please let us know what you end up with and how you like it :o

SO I'm thinking...maybe Chris Renfro has the data about the Hammerhead, and I bet Freddie A knows the math...

Could we make a relationship between *composite or resultant* coefficient of restitution of the whole cue (tip/shaft/ etc...the whole assembly), and the optimal velocity at impact to most greatly take advantage of that setup. Over a certain velocity is like an audio file clipping lets say. The tip reaches maximum compression at a certain speed and weight of impact I guess...the force of the impact. So a good material is reactive in the speed range that matches the person breaking...their desired break speed for best performance. Would it make sense that different tips might benefit different breakers differently? Like one brand compresses best at one speed, other brand at a different speed. Whichever one matches the speed you want to break at is probably gonna be the best tip for that person. It would be cool if there could be some unit of measure about different break tips, maybe express it in approximate mph range. I guess my question is...do people measure the "speed" of a material? Like how fast it can return to its original shape. Ideas? I'm all over the place here someone set me straight. (Hammerhead seems great at a lot of speeds...jumps *ridiculous*. I put one on a Jacoby that already was great...I literally laughed a lot at how silly it was. You can jump and "grab" the cueball and do stuff.) I would love the opinion of someone with a huge break.
Sorry for the space odyssey...

Wow I just scrolled up to see your post after I posted mine. I basically said the same lol. But I also loved Taom. I thought that tip felt fantastic. My only issue was for me and the way I break, my tip rubs on the cloth, and the Taom wore down like a piece of chalk. However, if I was one of the many other people that don't break that way, I think Taom is tremendous. Very nice feel to it. The Hammerhead takes a bit to get the feel of, but it greatly rewards good centerball hits for sure.

^ I really like the idea of testing velocity/compression rates and comparing the tips by those results  Would make a good read for sure. Maybe Chris sees this and tackles it on?

I do agree on the Taom wearing down like butter if you break in to the cloth like Sigel does. I changed my 8&10ball breaking technique a bit in that regard when I got the Diamond at home. Not to save the tip but to save the cloth :)
