in your opinion

Have you read either of the books? Both books spend enough time talking about stance and stroke to give a beginner a good start. The reason they both focus on shots is because, well, if you can't execute a single shot correctly, how do you execute a game or a practice session correctly?

I stand by my recommendations and will recommend that a lesson be taken in the not-so-distant.

DOuble-D don't get me wrong and yes i have read most pool books under the sun (BTW someone recomended george fells very good reco) the point about Ray and Bob Byrn about them selling books based on shots will be lost on beginer players. I refer to SHOTS as tricks. "Hey let me show you a shot... " It misses the point of learning to play pool. In contrast Phill Cappel has a practice book conceived to build you up from day zero to pro level (if you have enough talent and will and time and courage). It has chapters on fundamentals, on the mental side of the games, on practice by yourself, with partners, with your team. it builds you from a D player to and A+, none of it are SHOTS (tricks) or banks form the points of the pockets. it has progress tracking charts test grids on every exercise so you can build on your foundation and se how you improve over time, real quality stuff, not a hustle (like most DVD's btw). And books are second only to great teachers or coachs but they cost less.
