Indexing mod for my lathe

I need to be able to index my lathe and plan to modify it for that purpose.
I have found two basic concepts and would appreciate opinions.

One is to drill indents into the backup plate.
And the other is to add a plate behind the back up plate.
What are your thoughts?

What, in your opinion, would be the optimum useful number of indexes?
24 - 36 - 48 - 72
 
On Ebay, you will find 'universal' style kits to mod your lathe with an indexing plate. Here is one as an example:

This will at least give you an idea, and for $100 the plate is already drilled. I haven't used it, but looks like a solid item.

Allisam seems to have decent products. Bought a few from him and is a good person to work with.

I was going to buy an Index Plate from him and likely still will at some point. Altho, the Deluxe will Index quite well, you do need something that will sometimes do the trick in small increments. I was mainly interested in being able to do that to make Slotted Ring Work.

Indexing plate, a few small modifications and the plate would fit in the rear chuck.

I think for Cue work 24 is the optimum spacing. What kind of lathe do you have.

Also, ignore the suggestion by Dave38, as that picture is a differential indexer for a milling machine.

I think you should take a second look before discrediting someones sugestions.

I got it from ALisam's ebay page, so I assumed it was a lathe he used or the demo. He also makes a smaller one for the Jet mini wood lathe which may be better suited for a deluxe, but not sure.

Thank you all for the replies. I have a central machinery 12x36. I am not using a backup chuck so mounting a plate there is not an option.
 
Checked out the Alisam options. Very interesting. However I do not have a backup chuck I constructed something to replace that and as such I cannot add the Alisam plate to the back of the lathe. I guess I could add the 10" disk to the back up back up plate but that would eliminate a number of the indexing options. So I think I am still set on the concept of drilling index points into the side of the back up plate.
So far the most common response is 24 indents. I think I have space to drill two rows of indents, so if the primary is @ 24 what would the suggestion be for the second row?
