This indexer is a shop necessity. I've got 4 or 5 of them around the shop for all different purposes. You can make a coupling to attach to the back of the spindle or you can close onto whatever the material you are wanting to index if it is protruding from the back of the spindle.

Howdy,
You could mount a degree wheel, like what's used to set valve/cam timing on a motor, on the back side of the spindle. The advantage is that you're not relying on a fixed tooth count on a particular gear of the lathe. Free-wheel your spindle and figure a way to lock it when you want to make a cut and you should be able to pick-up any degree 0 thru 359.

How would you mount the material to the index collet, are you able to put a chuck onto it.
thanks will

It uses 5-C collets. Put in the proper size collet and close the collet onto your material. They run in size from an 1/8 inch to 1 1/8 inch although only the through hole in the collets are no bigger than an inch.

Take the face plate off behind the chuck and set it in a spin indexer on a mill and mill slots in the edge of the plate. Mark them and add a lever and pin that is the same size as the slots to use as a stop mounted to the lathe.
