How many of you in your pool playing years have taken snubs, sarcastic remarks, insults to your intelligence and game, and downright belittling
obnoxious remarks to use as a MOTIVATOR for raising your game up a level
or two.

They DROVE you to practice harder, try much harder, to learn faster than
you would have otherwise.

Not something from getting instructions from an instructor, but from other
players, or perhaps from players better than you.

They have a wide range, from 'My 3 legged dog with one eye could have made that shot' to 'bend over, I am going to do it to you' to 'girls can't
play pool (or for the guys, go find yourself a skirt), to 'come back when you can make 3 fookin balls' to 'if you want to run with the big dogs'.

I am leaving the really bad ones omitted, because of all of the profanity
they contain .... lol

In otherwords, when someone pissed you off with their remarks, you used
it as ammunition to get your game going.

A story or two about this would be interesting for the troops.

I sometimes use other people's actions or words as a motivator for a game. I'll get sort of mad or put myself in a mad place and really focus. My main motivator, however, is getting beat. I hate losing and ended up buying a pool table, snooker table, new garage for snooker table, cue sticks, cases, chalk, instructional books, lessons, and various sundry items because I got beat by a friend and then my cousin. They don't/can't beat me anymore! : )

Scott, this happened to me at a tournament a couple of weeks ago. R-7, 9-Ball. Opponent, who is a well known local smarta$$, has me down 2-0. I miss a position play and leave my self a tough shot, he laughs and says, "Yeah, Nunley, you're a position playing fool, aren't ya!" Really pi$$ed me off and I said "F#@k you... I don't have to play position, I love this shot!". I cut the ball in, and played nice position, good shots and killer safety for the rest of the set... he lost 7-2. I was tired, there wasn't much money involved in the tourney and it was WAY after midnight already, so until he opened his mouth, winning the set really didn't mean that much to me, but after his remarks, I turned on the switch and got after it. Ended up losing to Darryl Cowan, hill-hill, in the finals. Had to double dip him and got him once, lost the second one. So, the smarta$$ set me on fire instead of sharking me like he intended.

Later,
Bob
