I've read the book Talent is Overrated by Geoffrey Colvin because it was mentioned in a few threads over the years whenever there is a comment concerning natural talent. The premise of the book is that it's not necessarily about talent but about deliberate practice that makes an expert in fields such as chess, darts, golf and even pool. The theory and science behind the book is from research conducted by Dr. K. Anders Ericsson, Professor of Psychology at Florida State University. Basically, it states that anyone can become an expert at something by applying deliberate practice for 10,000 hours.
Here is an interesting link http://thedanplan.com. Dan is attempting to become a top golfer by applying the theory and principles proposed by Dr. Ericsson. It's a very interesting experiment that could have relevance to pool. He started out as a rank amateur barely even playing. I'll be curious to see how this plays out.
