I was recently asked to put together a pool event for a team based compitition at work. Other event's were baseball, trivia, lawn bowling and a few others.
I was asked to see if I could do something to even things out between the staff that were players and non-players as this was a fun event to be used for team building.

I spent some time knocking a few ideas around and I finally came up with something I thought would work. I bastardized the Allan Hopkins Q skills challange, and made it into a game a team could play as one.

Anyways, below are the rules that I came up with. The tournament came off without a hitch, everybody loved the format and a good time was had by all.

CBS Olympics ( Golf Pool)

Where: Metro Billiards at 10250 ? 106 Street
When: July 17, 5:00 PM.

Object: sink 5 racks of 15 balls in as few strokes as possible, each rack counting as a separate game. The match would be the total of the 5 racks combined.

Each rack is a team effort where the team rotates players throughout a rack after either a person has missed or has sunk 4 balls in a row.

Teams get to warm up rack before they start.

Rules:
1. Rack fifteen balls on the Foot Spot, in any order, and place the cue ball ON the Head Spot. Break the balls. If you miscue or miss the cue ball completely, it is a foul. Re-Rack, break again and add one to your score. If you miscue and contact the rack, you may choose to continue shooting, leaving the balls where they lie and not take a foul. Each foul results in a penalty of 1 stroke.

2. After the break, if you do not have a shot or do not like the shot you have, you may choose one of three options:
A. Place the cue ball anywhere behind the Head String and shoot any ball above the Head String.
B. Place the cue ball on either the Head Spot or the Foot Spot and shoot any ball.
C. Place the rack over the cue ball (where it lies) and move the cue ball anywhere inside the rack and shoot any ball. All of the options noted above are a penalty and add 1 to your score.

3. After the break, whether you made a ball or not, proceed to shoot keeping track of the number of strokes you take, calling each shot. Try to run the table, shooting the balls in any order UNTIL THERE ARE FIVE BALLS REMAINING. When you pocket ten balls, then the last five balls must be shot IN ROTATION (in numerical order starting with the lowest number ball). Count the number of strokes it takes to sink the first 10 balls, if the last five balls are pocketed with out missing then the 5 strokes are considered free. If they are not sunk without missing then continue to add the number of strokes it take until the rack is cleared. A perfect rack would be 10 strokes unless 2 or more balls are sunk in one shot.

The team with the lowest over all score wins.

You're right that's very similar. I'm not sure I'll ever have to run one of these again, if I do, I'll look at taking the best of both or something. I did like the limit on the number of consecutive shots a player could take before allowing his/her teamate the next shot.(4 shots)

This evened things up and stopped the pool players from running racks.
