Interesting one pocket spot

Have you ever seen a good quality player play a newer player one pocket and give a spot like 30-5, 50-8, etc.

I found it interesting that when I watched one of these games that the ball went on the spot and lined up, basically it turned into that drill that we all love so much (sarcasm) of shooting it and coming back one or two rails, shooting it again, etc.

Fun to watch lol..
 
When I first started, a very good local player gave me 35-8, and he beat me the first few times we played. He would have to make change after spotting balls, a nickle meaning he owed 5 balls etc. One game I needed 1 and he still needed twenty something, and he banked one in and ran out on me. I'll never forget that game.

I have since learned a little about the game. The spotted balls can create a wall that leads to some interesting strategy and can yeild a lot of balls if you can get on the right side of the stack to run the drill like situation you describe. The key is breaking up the balls close to the spot as you shoot the 4th or 5th one down, and then if you get shape on them you can run those and get position to repeat the drill again after the table is cleared and the balls are spotted again. If you know the game, it isn't as big of a spot as it sounds.

Also, the guy giving out that big spot can scratch pretty much at will to get out of a trap or to trap the weaker player. It works well if it forces the weaker player to scratch back: going from 25-5 to 26-6 to 27-7...really shrinks the spot quickly, in percentage terms.
 
When I first started playing 1p, there was this guy who offered to play me the layout below for a drink or something. I knew it was an insult but I didn't mind the learning oppotunity. Tried a few games, probably never won a game :o :o :o

Btw, the guy was/has been one of the best players in NY

You seem to be saying that spotted balls are coming up one at a time during the player's turn. This is usually not the way one pocket works. You shoot until you have run out or all the balls are off the table. If you run all the balls off the table without winning, all the balls that should be spotted are spotted at that point. It sounds to me like the spotter (of 50-8) is running a scam by taking back a large part of the spot by rule trickery. Or perhaps I misunderstood your post.

If a player if giving up 50-8, and his opponent has 4 while he has none, and he starts running the balls, it should procede like this: He runs 11 balls off the table, clearing it completely. All 11 balls spot at the same time, leaving a line of 11 balls on the long string. After the 11 balls spot, the player continues his run. At this point things become quite easy for the player if he has left the cue ball on the right side of the line.

Note that 11 balls will barely fit on the line between the foot spot and the foot cushion. It 12 balls had to be spotted, one of them would have to go above the foot spot.

I think you did misunderstand his post. He wrote "the ball went on the spot and lined up..." but if he had typed " the balls went on the spot and lined up..." you would have seen that he was talking about the same rule you are talking about.
 
Sounds amazing to me...I've never seen a One Pocket spot that goes over one rack like that...
 
Or, you can play it to where say they run every available ball on the table, and then spot one ball at a time to shoot draw back, shoot draw back.
 
I'll play anyone one stop onepocket if they have to one stop and I can keep shooting. Course, I'm a D level player.

I've lost at it twice so far..

this is not 1p, this is a hustle, i gave shortstops 35-40 shotrs to make all 15 in the corner as you have shown, if they miss i spot a ball, they cant do it bet high!!!!! STICK:D :D :D :D :D :D

When he needed twenty something, what happened when he cleared the entire table? Did he spot all the balls back up on one turn, and run out from there?

Yep, he actually had to spot all 8 balls and run them out, and re-spot them all several times. He was not just spotting one at a time and shooting them in. Like I said earlier, the secret is to make sure you break up the last spotted balls as you shoot the 4th or 5th one down from the spot. You can break them up earlier as well, but there is more risk of not getting good shape, or balls getting tied up if you break them up too early.
