Interesting quote

I saw this quote this morning and thought it closely describes how I feel at the pool table (although the quote's author has probably never played pool):

That applies to a lot of things. In pool it probably applies in that you should do what you think is right for you and not what others may think you should do.

I remember being at the US open in Chicago and Miz was playing Crane. At one point Crane had played a safe putting Miz up table. Miz looked at the situation for the longest time and maybe three or four times got down and aimed at just skimming a ball and getting back up table for a safe but he kept getting up. You could tell he wanted to shoot and not play the safe. Finally he just got down and shot a long back cut and made it. He shot the shot in like 2 seconds almost without thinking. Needless to say he ran out and went on the win the tournament, one of four he would win.

Crane after the match went nuts telling Miz to his face he had shot the wrong shot and should have played safe. I have no doubt Crane would not have shot the shot if you held a gun on him. But for Miz it was the right shot and I think he would have defended his decision even if he had missed it. Years later when I got to know Miz I once mentioned the match and told him I was sitting there when he shot that shot. He remembered the shot clearly. He said he wasn't going to shot it at first but after a while he knew it was the right shot. He said you can't be afraid to do what you know is right even if it goes wrong.

Another quote

I heard a good quote a couple of months ago, but it may not apply to pool. Mark Cuban(owner of the Dallas Mavericks)was on the Howard Stern Show and he was talking about his father. Mark's dad is up in age and apparently is not slowing down. He quoted his father as saying "Today is the youngest you'll ever be for the rest of your life, so you should have all of the fun you can have".

I thought his dad made a great point.
 
I've got an even simpler philosophy, summed up in this quote (offered to me by my Dad at age 6):

"Let that be a lesson to you."

If it goes wrong, figure out how to make the next shot goes right. If it goes right, don't change anything.
 
Another quote

I like this one:

"When you speak, everyone finds out how smart (or dumb) you are. When you remain silent, they're not sure."

That can apply to lots of things..... not limited to, but including, this board. :)

I could not get that across to my friend before he passed away a couple of months ago. He would shoot the wrong shot or the right shot the wrong way very often.

When I would shoot a shot that he himself would not be shooting, he would have one of two reactions. He would be amazed by the outcome or he would think that I had just made a mistake.

Whenever it did not come off with the best result, I would tell him, 'Yeah, but it was the right shot to shoot & explain why. At the end, when I would win the game, I would remind him of that shot.

Here's another quote from Vince Lombardi that I'll modify into a Yogism. Lombardi said, 'Fatigue makes cowards of us all'.

Yogi might have said, 'Fear can make you into a coward'.

When you know what is right & do otherwise you turn yourself from a possible genius into a fool.

If you never shoot difficult shots that would be great shots if made, you will never make a great shot.

I think I actually like it when I get hung or hang myself because it is another opportunity for another great shot.:wink:
