interesting shaft experiment

Last week I chipped the ferrule on my OB2 shaft and it left nothing to install a new tip/ferrule on to. So, I set up my ghetto lathe and cut the shaft below the ferrule removing a total of 1-1/4" off factory length. Next I cut a 3/8" tenon and installed a cut down non-capped Ivorine 3 ferrule, and a non-milkdud LePro tip with no pad. I also re-tapered the shaft to a constant "euro"/conical taper down to 10.5mm at the tip.

After about 3 hours of play I am VERY happy with this set up on my LP Custom "pool" cue! The hit is softer then before, yet there is less "flex" in the shaft I guess from shortening it. The more firm the stroke the better it performs. Now I know why carom cues are shorter, smaller tip, and conical tapered!!! IT WORKS.

Just a little info for you guys out there like me who like to tinker, and looking for a way to turn a "pool cue" into a carom cue with a shaft change. The next closest thing to this shaft is my OB Pro....which I may re-taper now :)

Thanks for reading my mad scientist rant!
have fun,
Gerry
