Introduction. Hi everyone

Welcome! For wood, check out the several cuemaker groups on facebook. A good one is New Cue Builders. Several guys are on there selling quality wood cheaper than you can buy online. I have been selling off most of my wood supply on there. I have bocote and cocobolo listed now and recently sold off most of my ebony.

Smart man. I am not a cue maker but over the decades have seen many come and go here on the forums. Getting too big for their britches or in over their heads seems a common thread for those who disappeared.

My neighbor, that got me interested in cue building, dyes and stabilizes wood. He and I are much alike... both friggin crazy 🤪
Were having an ugly wood contest, that is to find the ugliest piece of wood you can find and make it into a pool cue... I might have misunderstood the mission. He found some highly figured black walnut with white sap wood he is slowly turning down.. and i found an ugly stick... But I'll work with it.. lol

Cool. Your lump of wood looks a bit like diamond willow (although perhaps not a prize specimen). We have lots here in my city along the river banks. Stuff grows like weeds, used to hate going through that jungle.

Got the controler all wired up, just need to get the software configured. Have a few 3-4 day weekends coming up and hope to get a little bit accomplished.
Hit the local woodcraft and scored a nice piece of zebra wood today alog with more bloodwood.
Almost grabbed a 24" stick of ebony, but $80.00 ?? Couldn't bring myself to do it.
I seem to have a bloodwood and ebony fetish, oh well better than feet I suppose, and they compliment each other very nicely.

Wood has to have detectable grain and figure. Seems like ebony, you have to bling it up.

Although last time with the novusun controller I followed the directions and spent 3 days trying to figure out why it wasn't communicating. Turns out the IP address in the directions was wrong and I should have used the IP address that was on the disc that came with it...Silly me..
But for a real mentally challenging machine I have a hardinge dsma that runs great and will go non stop for a 1000 part run.... once you spend 3 days fixing its wtf is wrong with it now syndrome....

At least all of the wiring is color coded which makes for easy tracing as long as its not all red!!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

It definitely looks like it's been under water or growing in a flood plain or creekbank. Might be hard as concrete. Some of the driftwood I use for walking sticks is cedar. Gorgeous once sanded down and polyurethaned. Occasionally I'll get a piece of oak or maple you could use for a jack handle!! Hard stuff.
I wonder if wood like that would be less prone to warpage??
I hope that piece turns out well for you and def look forward to your next projects. Some outside the box thinking like yours can only help the custom cuemaking industry.

I thought the same thing , it certainly does look to be diamond willow . which may make a fantastic pool cue ???

When it's green it could be considered soft as it is or can be a bit flimsy so to speak , but that's when it's relatively thin , when it's thicker like what was in the picture and dryed out it's rather rigid . .

Some folks make very nice walking sticks and canes from it after they carve out the eyes exposing " eyes " and the different colors and shapes of some of them .
My grandfather wrapped some fishing like around his hat band so if he were near a creek and got hungry he'd cut a willow stick and use it as a fishing rod / pole to try to catch a meal .

Yeppir. We had a monster weeping willow in our yard when I was a kid.
Storm got it, but some of those whips were 20 feet long!!
I only got whipped with one once. When my mom saw the welts it left on my back, the belt was all she used after that. Thank goodness!!😂
 
Went out a new exotic lumber store today that I've been wanting to visit for some time now and stocked up a bit for future use.
Can't wait to get some of this turned and start putting things together.. still waiting on my joint pins, and a bit of tooling to show up. Hopefully be ready for next weekend...
Nap time, then off to shoot a few games..
