Ipe Ferrule

Naked Cues

Has anyone tried using ipe for ferrules? Seems like it would be interesting to try it out. My worry is that epoxy may not permanently fasten it: My carpenter buddy told me a about a ipe handrail return that fell apart after being epoxied.

The ferrule would be threaded on.

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jason.

Ipe is very heavy....I have used it in points and but sleaves without problem...but you must use thinner or something comparable to remove the oils.....also ipe crackes with the grain quite easy.....so for a ferrule it would be very heavy(lots of deflection) and could run the risk of cracking.....and never count titebond 1 out for any wood to wood bonding.....

Ipe

I've cored with Ipe using West system epoxy many times...no problems, 6 year old cues still ok. Don't know about using it for ferrules. Ivorine 4 is whiter and harder :)

Can someone PM me where I can find some Ipe? I've been looking but cannot seem to find a source.

Update: My buddy finally came through with the ipe wood (wow, contractors are slow). The ipe ferrule and medium royal oak tip make for a soft hit that seems to dig into the cue. The cue it goes on is almost complete, so I'll know more once it's chalked-up and I can wail on it a bit.

CCC - You're absolutely right. This experiment didn't pan out very well. On an off-note, I ended up using 30 min epoxy to bond the ipe to the maple...seems to be working well.

I've been playing with the cue and have decided to change out the ferrule - the hit is too soft and has almost no feedback. Also, deflection is a huge problem, as predicted.

Oh well, it was fun to try! :D

On an unrelated note, anyone need some ipe decking drops???

It should be easy to find locally depending on the size you need. I'm not sure about finding It over 1" locally, but I do know It is used for decking, flooring and that sort of stuff, comes in 1" thick planks. I had a contractor give me some planks one time, and He called It Brazilian Cherry. As others mentioned It's very heavy stuff. I already gave away what extra had to other cuemakers, or I would send you a plank or 2. What size are you looking for anyhow, and how much do you need? You may want to use Brazilian Cherry as the key word for your search of sources since that's what some people call It.
