IPT Rule Question

I was watching one of the matches at the HardTimes qualifier and one player was shooting at the eight ball and scratched. His opponent had played a safety (I think this was Luat) and this player (don't remember who) made contact with the eight but then scratched.

This was counted as loss of game (it was not three consecutive fouls either), but I couldn't find anything in the rules that said if you scratch while shooting the eight, but do not pocket the eight, then it's a loss of game. It does say I think that if you pocket the eight but scratch it is a loss of game.

Does anyone know for sure what the rule is? If you shoot the eight and scratch but do not pocket the eight is it loss of game or just ball in hand for your oppponent?

Yes poolbum......when playing the eight it is definitely loss of frame if the cue ball scratches or comes to rest anywhere other than on the bed of the table, see IPT Rule No 15 (d).

It´s in the Official IPT Rules, 15 d):

15.0 Playing the Eight Ball

When playing the eight ball:

a. The eight ball must always be the first ball contacted by the cue ball, and it or any other ball including the cue ball must contact a rail after the initial hit. Failure to do this is a foul and the opponent is awarded cue ball in hand; it is not a loss of game.

b. Combinations, caroms, kisses, are all legal as long as the eight ball is the first ball contacted by the cue ball.

c. Pocketing the eight in the wrong pocket is a loss of game.

d. If a player scratches or jumps the cue ball so that it comes to rest off the playing surface of the table while playing the eight ball, it is a loss of game. Not making a legal hit on the eight ball, but leaving the cue ball on the table, is a Ball in Hand foul- not an automatic loss of game.
