Irish Linen or Wrapless?

I'm curious what everybody thinks of a wrap vs no wrap cue. I've been shooting with Irish linen, but notice my grip is becoming looser and looser with time. My hands sweat pretty easy, and even so I notice the cue almost slides out of my hand on contact with the cue ball, causing me to want to subconsciously grab it right at the end of the follow through.

I think I might buy a good wrapless cue because I know the house cues have a more positive traction when my hands sweat. Any real life experience out there? Also I don't want rubber or leather. Thanks!

It's all a taste thing...really. I like the linen on my playing cue, but my break cue is wrapless. I'm happy with both. Somebody else may like the reverse. Another person may like both cues one or another.

I prefer linen. It seems to do a better job of providing a dry, consistent feel for me. A wrapless cue feels nice at first, my break cue is wrapless, but if I'm at the table for a few shots and my hands are sweaty the grip starts to feel slippery.

I prefer a nice soft to the touch smooth leather (Kangaroo, Calfskin etc...). But linen over wrapless myself. As I have always found wrapless gets slick for me after playing a while.

Like most questions that revolve around something that is personal preference, you are going to get answers that cover everything out there that is available.

I own everything from wrapless, to linen, silk, leather, lizard, and nylon.

My preference is nylon.

I think you answered your own question.

We are talking about traction - traction is created by friction - The best traction, for pool shooting, should be strong enough to allow you to hold that butt as lightly as possible without your hand ever slipping.

There are two sides to every traction situation. In this case it's the butt and your hand.

We all have different hands that create the need for different butt surfaces in order to achieve 'good traction' for different individuals.

I'm a wrapless guy and I think you are too, judging on the experiences that you have had with linen and leather.

Consider yourself fortunate. A wrapless cue never starts to become unwrapped and it never needs to be rewrapped.

Good luck.

I have always had the "sweaty hand" problem, as well. They aren't terribly moist, but they sure aren't dry.

After trying leather, lizard, linen, wrapless, etc... I've settled on linen. For me, I like the feel and it gives me a good, consistent grip on the cue. That said, I've also heard good things about the elephant wraps, so I may give one of those a try.

Usually, a wrapless cue will be slick when your hands become moist, and it's the most difficult finish to get a good grip on, due to the lack of texture. Keep in mind that the house cues you talk about have a different finish on them than most custom and production cues do. The house cues don't have the high gloss, clear coat type of finish on them, so they will be a bit easier to hang on to.

I love the feel of wrapless but the look of linen better. I'm not a very sweaty fella, so wrapless works great for me as far as maintaining my hand's tack on the cue. The cue I'm currently having made is going to be wrapless, and if over time and as I get older I start to sweat a bit more, I may have a linen wrap put on it.

Cork is the best playing wrap just don't look like much for long. I generally use linen.

Stick some number 9 Cortland on your cue and you'll be very happy.......it's not an Irish Linen........It's Cortland......the only hand woven Cuttyhunk fishing line ever made.......all the others were machine twisted........there's a big difference in strand uniformity and flax consistency........hard to find but go Cortland whenever you can.

I am a wrap less guy when comes to my playing cue now that i'm older and can afford what i want. I design my cues based on what i like and what is normal or expect because of my passion for the game. So what i did once was have a cue made with a wrap and then clear coat over that B****, do i get the wrap less feel with the wrap look, it was a win-win for me. I plan on doing that with my next cue that's going to have a leather wrap

I prefer a leather wrap. I've never been crazy about a wrapless shooting cue.

The first cue I bought had a linen wrap. I figured "with" must be better than "without", right? Wrong. I always felt like the cue was slipping out of my hand.

One day I didn't have my cue with me so I used a house cue. Bingo! Lousy cue but it had a great grip.

I switched to a wrapless cue (OB121) and haven't looked back.

Four or Five

Four or five of each works for me .
4 or 5 wraplesses 4 or 5 leather wraps , 4 or 5 irish linen wraps . Don't forget stacked leather wraps too................................
