I've never quite understood this. Moisture will migrate into cold dry air until the airborne level evens out. Heat might have been intended to keep the slate from cracking but all claims seem to be that heated tables are faster be it with electrically warmed slate or just TV lights. IDKThat's what I've heard, the heat drives the humidity out of the cloth.
