Is it customary to tip Tournament Directors?

I am just starting to play in some tournaments. The Tournament Directors seem to work very hard, very long hours and yet keep a great disposition while trying to keep everyone happy. As a new player, they have gone out of their way to make sure I am comfortable and informed.

I am just wondering what is the best way to show my appreciation.

Play in their tournaments. It really depends on your personal philosophy on tipping. If you win the event do you tip them? If you go two and out do you tip still? I don't think I have ever seen a TD getting tipped but sometimes that sort of thing is under the table. If it were seen openly, some might misconstrue it to be a bribe. I believe you have to follow your own heart on this. Some people tip for everything. Some people expect a tip. If you feel the desire to tip the TD go ahead and do it but be discreet. You don't need our permission.

To tip the TD then get a great draw in the event is suspicious to say the least.
To avoid the type of suspicion, if possible, the runners should ALL agree prior to the start of the event to donate e.g. $3 each towards event management. 3x30=90 isn't a slap in the face, more like a show of appreciation. Win - Win

Call it the donation of appreciation :thumb up:

Thank them for a well-run tournament. I don't think they get even that very often, let alone tips.

I've seen many td's expect tips. I'm against tipping td's. A td is supposed to remain independent throughout the tournament. When I used to run local tournaments many players offered me tips and I refused them. It's hard to turn down money, but I think it's improper to take it.

I've seen td's who received tips assign certain tables to certain players. I've seen td's throw a call a particular player's way.

Td's also should not be betting on players and should not participate in calcuttas.

Depending one who is running the tournament. They may already be taking money out of the entry fee. They may be taking money from the Calcutta. I think all that should be up front. Tournament director can take more than first place. Take the entry fee + players - payouts. Then you will see if they are getting paid. Or at least someone is getting paid.

Tipping is out of control, IMHO the workers who pick our food bust but, and never get a tip, or expect a tip.

In local tournaments here in SC I often tipped if I came in first or second. It wasn't expected, entirely up to the players. Several of us did it quite often.

I tip anyone I feel did a great job or service for me. A friend of mine would always say....A hundred thank you's do not equal $10.00(or 2 or 5, etc)

Perhaps just buy the tournament director a beer or other beverage to show your appreciation.
