When I started to reply to the jump cue paper thread I wanted to be sure I knew exactly what patrimonious means. I knew what I thought it means bt I wasn't sure. I don't believe that it is a word. I have researched on the net and tried to look it up in the Oxford English Dictionary, the bible of words, and cannot find it or a defintition for it. I see that it is used and can infer the meaning of the users through context but I find no definition.

Patrimony is an inheritance or a legacy. As in George's patrimony is the whole of southern France. A patrimonial system is one in which the right to rule over property descends through inheritance or legacy.

But nowhere is the word patrimonious acknowledged or defined. I believe that it is used most commonly to mean displaying arrogant control or influence but the correct definition if it were a word would be something like preserving a legacy.

I believe the correct word is patriarchal. Which is exerting autocratic control.

I ask the group to please provide some reference that patrimonious is a word and what it means if possible.

Thanks,

John

PS. Tony and I have been having a pleasant conversation and we are about to make the rules for all pool players everywhere. :-)

These are all taken from the net as instances where the word is used but they do not indicate if it is really a word nor whether it is the proper word for the context.

Insert anything about legacy or heritage into any of the above sentences and they don't make sense in context.

Thank you for trying,

John

Patrimony is a word but not patrimonious. Patrimony means inherited from you father.

Evidently not. From http://www.m-w.com/
The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary. Click on a spelling suggestion below or try again using the search box to the right.

3. patrimony
4. Patrimony
5. patronymics
6. patronymic

Patrimony is however:

This must have came from an Aflac commercial and yogi sitting in a barber chair talking. Obviously some inside baseball term about getting patted on the butt after hitting a grand slam or something like that I bet. :D

Hey, I like that one!

It sounds to me more like a combination of Patronize + Acrimonious

Patronize: 2.) to behave in an offensively condescending manner toward.

Acrimonious: adj. caustic, stinging, harsh or bitter in nature, speech or behavior. ----ie: an acrimonious answer.

Will probably be in Webster's by next year.

Oh, I'm sorry. Damn!, I thought he was looking for a real legitimate definition. My mistake, I forgot where I was for a second there. ;)

Patrimonial is a word; patrimonious is not.
Sometimes if large numbers of people misuse
a word, over a period of time it becomes a word.
example- prioritize

That's kinda what I was looking for. I would say that prioritize means to list in order of importance and urgency. What comes to mind when you hear patrimonious?

FWIW I like the theory of patronize+acrimonius but I don't think that this is what most people think of when they hear the word (non-word) patrimonious.
