Is Pool a Sport?

What a silly and subjective question. Everyone has their own opinion of what defines a sport. With that said, the most unified and factual answer is yes, it is a sport.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport#Definition

This is the closest to a single worldwide definition of what a sport is. Regardless of your opinion, you must at least recognize the most widely accepted definition.

If you read the "Definition" section, it explains what separates sports from other activities and games. It even specifically mentions "billiard sports" as being sports.

From the second paragraph at the top of the wikipedia entry:

"Sport is generally recognised as activities which are based in physical athleticism or physical dexterity"

Pool may not be very physically demanding or require much athleticism, but it definitely requires physical dexterity. It's this combined with the competitive nature of pool that make it fit pretty much any generally accepted definition of what a sport is.

Physical skill comprises more than just athleticism and strength. It also includes dexterity, in which hand-eye coordination, and the coordination of muscle movements is most definitely a physical skill and it's very much central to pool. I guess your view is the most common misconception leading people to think pool isn't a "sport"

Sure, wrestling and sumo wrestling are sports. They both, as I said, have an emphasis on physical skill. My point isn't that big guys can't be athletic (I'll admit the anecdote about my friend was maybe a little beside the point); it's that pool doesn't emphasize physical skill. Pool clearly involves physical skill but that isn't it's central feature as in football, swimming, sumo wrestling, etc.

Pool is WAR in the minds of bar bangers!

Pool is an ART in the minds of aficionados!

Pool is a GAME in the minds of enthusiasts!

Pool is a VOCATION for the elite!

Pool is a SPORT for the physically challenged!

But above all, pool is, what it seems to be for the person who plays it!

And Pool is MAGIC in the hands of this man!

Professional pool requires a lot of mental and physical endurance. The top pros are in very good physical condition. For that reason I would consider professional pool to be a sport.

Would I consider what I do three-ish nights a week to be a sport? Well I'm no athlete, but I do it to be "sporting" and as a competitive outlet. Kind of a toss up there.

All sports are games, but not all games are sports.
