Ghost Players
I can assure you we don't get a line on all the young players, or old players for that matter.
While I do think it is less possible with the advent of the internet and AZ Billiards, I'm still pretty sure there are plenty of players flying under the radar...on purpose.
Regardless of the level of our complaint, there is a LOT more money laying around on the ground for pool players today than ever before. This weekend for example, in our area (within 250 miles) there were 4 tournaments held with prize money in excess of $1000 added. To me this means that the players have more to share and get to keep going at least another week.
I grew up in Greenway Billiards in Baton Rouge, LA...lot's of gambling, world-class players stopping in, AND world class pool detectives. I would say that at least twice a year someone would pull in the parking lot with out of state tags, provide a false name, make a pretty good score on a few of the lesser gods, and continue on their way (with folks scatching their heads and wondering how good could that guy play) without either ever being identified. I can remember several notables who tried and were busted (both identity and dollars) and several world beaters that were a mystery.
I know of and participated in several road trips where we were never ID'd, never in jeopardy, and came home with the cash. Let someone start swinging a lot of money around (insurance settlement, sale of a business, inheritance, divorce) and watch for the door to open.
I actually suspect it is easier to fly under the radar today because there are so many short-stops out there today that a fella could easily beat out of pretty sporty money and never get noticed.
Just my opinion...you be the judge.
