Is there a secret subculture - an unknown Mosconi Out there?

I thought it was a dead issue!!

I dont know who revived all of this..............not me! I thought we had all reached the conclusion there is not an idiot savant out there, and besides you answered the conundrum in one word!

No

Quite simply

A champion has to beat competition, and that isn't found in basements, it found in the Pool rooms and bars across the country. Just ask Shane VB.

Ghost Players

I can assure you we don't get a line on all the young players, or old players for that matter.

While I do think it is less possible with the advent of the internet and AZ Billiards, I'm still pretty sure there are plenty of players flying under the radar...on purpose.

Regardless of the level of our complaint, there is a LOT more money laying around on the ground for pool players today than ever before. This weekend for example, in our area (within 250 miles) there were 4 tournaments held with prize money in excess of $1000 added. To me this means that the players have more to share and get to keep going at least another week.

I grew up in Greenway Billiards in Baton Rouge, LA...lot's of gambling, world-class players stopping in, AND world class pool detectives. I would say that at least twice a year someone would pull in the parking lot with out of state tags, provide a false name, make a pretty good score on a few of the lesser gods, and continue on their way (with folks scatching their heads and wondering how good could that guy play) without either ever being identified. I can remember several notables who tried and were busted (both identity and dollars) and several world beaters that were a mystery.

I know of and participated in several road trips where we were never ID'd, never in jeopardy, and came home with the cash. Let someone start swinging a lot of money around (insurance settlement, sale of a business, inheritance, divorce) and watch for the door to open.

I actually suspect it is easier to fly under the radar today because there are so many short-stops out there today that a fella could easily beat out of pretty sporty money and never get noticed.

Just my opinion...you be the judge.

Bud Hypes was from W. Virginia. There was also Horace Harper who dusted most who came thru his homegrounds somewhere in Georgia. Also Chuck Morgan who snuck around & played @ top speed & Billy Stouffer who could do impossible things with a stroke that came from somewhere in outer space. Billy & Chuck both ended up in Cleveland in my young years.

Idiot Savant Pool Players

Yea, they simply hate to lose.
I once knew of a retarded guy. Yes I know the correct word is developmentally disabled. In the NW. Sometimes my road partners couldn't always be with me. Ya know how in bars sometimes people want to play partners. Well, my road partner told me if he wasn't around to ask him. I hate to tell you this boys but this guy could play rings around all the short stops I know. If he could of thought thru his outs better he could have been world class. Absolute control of the cue ball and what a stroke. Yes there are Savants around. But I don't know if they are alone in basements. We all like to win. Most of us love the crowd, if we are truthful. "Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser" I'm not saying there isn't etiquite. But.....
