Is this a silly pre-shot routine

I was just wondering what everybody makes of the pre-shot routine I go through and if they have any pre shot rituals they go through, so anway here is my routine: I walk rounf the table once, check my angles, chalk my cue but here is the weird part I point to the pocket or place I want to shoot to and this helps me determine whether I have to left or right spin on my shot.

Do any of you think this is weird?

Yes. How long does this take to accomplish? Do you walk around the table every shot? I understand looking at each shot whe standing before getting over it, but your routine sounds like it would take forever.

I don’t think walking around the table for every shot should be part of a routine. Occasionally, yes, for difficult shots but to make it a habitual is going overboard, IMO. A lot of players point their stick. I assume the most common way is pointing it through the CB at the contact point on the OB, but could be wrong. I believe once a player decides what to shoot and how to shoot it, a routine should take longer than 5 to 10 seconds before pulling the trigger.

I always say; if it works, don't fix it!

So if it works for *you*, then keep using it.

And there is something to be said about walking around the table. A few times I have had to leave the cue ball for the next shot going the opposite direction. Well I visualized my next shot from the wrong direction, left the cue ball exactly where I thought it should be, then when I went to hit my next shot, I was on the *wrong* side of the object ball!

So now I try to walk down or walk around and look at my next shot before shooting.

i wouldn't make fun of it or call it silly, if it works for you and you feel comfortable dong it, sounds purdy gooder to me. Although i know a few people who do that, and few people who make fun of them cause they take for ever. And you pointing to the pocket or where you are going to shoot too, comes in handy especially where i play cause people want you tell them what pocket you are playing. Cole 'TheConArtist'

Yes...absolutely.

If you shoot good with that routine, then don't worry about it. There are very good players out there that have some funny idosyncracies and they're not worried about what others' think and neither should you. Kid Delicious takes a long time for each shot and I doubt he's worried that others will not like it. Jeremy Jones is another player that feels he must go over to his seat on almost every shot and wipe his cue and hands with his cloth and I doubt he's concerned that this might be viewed by others' as inappropriate.

IMO, most people have the preshot routine mixed up with "ritual".

I view a PSR as a systematic approach to information gathering. Information that is needed to pocket balls and play shape.

While standing, I determine what speed, spin, and contact point is needed. I'll do whatever it takes to get this info, like walk around the table, but only if needed. I won't walk around the table if it is not needed. Thats just silly...

Once I have my speed, spin, and contact point, I get down and execute based on the information I have previously gatherd. I trust what I decided (when I was standing) and pull the trigger.

I try to line up the same way, if possible, so that may be routine, as well...

Thats what I call a preshot routine. Nothing silly about it. Just productive.

Great post Hooked! I agree that walking around the table (on every shot) is overboard. For me, that is. I could care less what another player does. The minuit your bothered with wutever your opponent is doing...your sharked. St.
